Got myself the marlin guide 45 70. Just put 25 rounds through it and its beautiful. Shoots wonderfully and I hope I can get some bear hunting in in the spring and maybe some deer or moose if I can get in the LEH.

Cheers, T2

I feel sorry for you if you got a newer one. Terrible gun. I know, I bought one. Definitly something I would not hunt bears with. Track record.....yikes. If it is a newer one, make sure you put a lot of rounds down the pipe before going after a wounded bear.

word is they fixed all the problems that they had.
i almost bought one a year ago, but couldn't find anywhere that had the stainless in, i was in b.c. and saskatchewan and everyone was out.
they sold alot of these guns.
unfortunately, they were all shite too, terrible problems from the plant.
what i heard was that it was a sabotage of some sort from some guys on the assembly line or something.
that could just be a rumour or an excuse though.
word is though, that the new releases have all the bugs worked out.
this gun in ss with the ghost-ring sights is beautiful.
but yeah, not a good thing to have for protection if it's not trust-worthy.

Is the 45 70 considered a hard kicker?

The Marlin rifles made by Marlin were very good, the last few years were riddled with problems after Remington took over. What age is the 45/70 and if you are not sure you can tell by the first couple serial #'s what would they be ? Does it have Rem stamped on the right side of barrel or JM stamped on left side ? We all thought you were looking for something that would not destroy squirrel meat while you were out surviving ?

I have heard this about the 45/70 and the 444, yet did not see a gun that it fit in yet unless you crushed the end of the shot shell. Is there a certain brand that you have tried this with? I bought my second 444 new last year, but it was not a Remington model it was a Marlin, made in 2007 , but sitting on shelf. What is your first two serial #'s ? What rounds did you fire through it with success ?

Take some time out and read the regs EVEN if you haven't taken your CORE.....it will only help you out in preparation.

Be careful were you shoot in Squamish - the Municipality has tight regs of where their boundary is

tomanik, well done. i bought the same gun (from reliable) a few months ago. according to john, one of the owners of reliable, the 'remlin' story goes that when remington bought marlin they moved the factory and most of the knowledgeable people didn't make the transition. the guns were crap for a couple years then remington took the problem seriously and sorted matters out. to signify the new guns they moved the serial number placement. i can't remember whether they moved it from below the hammer to the side of the receiver or vice versa, but if you just bought the gun it was almost certainly one of the new, better guns.

i have about 100 rounds through mine. i find the hornady leverevolution shells don't cycle as smoothly as the remingtons, probably because they are a bit longer, but i've read on various sites that the hornady ammo is a good hunting load.

i am very curious if a .410 shell could be safely fired. if anybody has tried that i'd love to hear.

yeah ive heard it can be done as well and i bought it from the same place!! I think my next course of action is another lever but i may go henry brass 30/30. i love the look of that gun and heard a 30/30 is a fantastic round

T2700, If you are serious about spring bear, send me a PM, my lovely wife and I hunt day trips starting about the end of April and make scouting trips before that.
Lets meet for coffee and if we all hit it off and you pass your core wewould be happy to have you accompany us on a few outings.
