I know how hard it is. The only solice is she lived more than a lot of dogs that finaly have to be put down at 16 never having "really" lived. She died doing a job she loved. I hope when my time comes I can say the same.I'm pulling for her pack mate from the sounds of things hes a fighter my condolences and fingers crossed.

Sorry about the loss of your dog losing a dog can be very hard no matter for what reason, and hopfully your other dog makes a recovery.
A few questions if you feel like answering them, this is the 3rd case of this happening I have heard of this year( 2 if yours happened around lkamloops)
Was wondering how it happened, the dogs caught the cat on ground before it could tree, in a cave, bailed from tree with out dogs tied back etc?
Were just the 2 dogs on the run? If you didnt want it and you mentioned that killing it didnt give you closure, why kill the cat or were you planning on
taking this cat if it treed the first time?

crappy to hear- ive seen them hog catching dogs down south have them vests- look like thin leather or kevlar- not sure if it would have helped but may have..
hopefully many more cats in the future!

chased a lynx in the am, the dogs caught it on the ground before it treed. They were marked up good, at the tree the cat was at the highest bushiest part. I was carrying a 30-30, my buddy packed his too..! he forgot to switch to his 22 with a scope. So we let it go

at the truck i noticed the started hound i just bought 3 weeks previous has a bite in her ham and she was on 3 legs walking..others had scratches etc. Nothing major. And Millies the pack runner feet did her classic fall apart bleedings from the snow

So i drove around a couple hours and crossed a cougar track that wasnt there an hour prior. So i let go my lead hound and her pack mate Mav/most experienced...they took the track strong so i wanted to turn around 2km ahead and get back down the hill to get off the frs road. Before i could they had it treed based on the gps. Once getting back down we pulled off and packed up and decided not to let the others go and to head in and get some pics. (I had Millie, Crocket the apprentice, Roxy with the bite on her ham and my buddies hound the apprentice) 200 yards in mav started to come back to us who are half way to what was them treeing..a few things pointed out a wreck to me...and tired dogs from the lynx earlier. So instead of looking over mav who appeared fine at the time i keep pushing to get Diablo my lead dog before night fall. I didnt hear her barking so i thought she was doing a grid to find a track...i pushed on and on watching the unit and listening for her...1.5hr later im within 40 feet of her and its now getting dark. I cant hear her or see her...everytime i close distance she runs it looks like on the gps. At one time i see something run away in the dark...so i think shes hurt or maybe injured from the lynx earlier and cant hear or see good. So i then decide to return in the am to go in and get her in the morning and not push her...i go 100 yards away and the gps says shes running??? FAst!??? then stops. I return to my friends that night eat dinner, and head to the frs road and still can beep her. Not moving, i rule shes sleeping. In the am i head in and find that the thing that ran off was the cougar, and he took her the distance and ate her and buried what was left of her. He decapitated her and i cant find her collar in the snow around her body!

When the dog burger died I made some remarks that maybe I should not have because I do not understand cat hunting and the relationship between dog and handler. I still don't get it per say only because if I'm grouse hunting the bush and my dog goes out of site for 5 mins I freak out. To leave a dog out for hours or a day in the bush does not even work in my brain. After having a hunting dog and the work/million other things involved(especially a hound) , its a heart wrenching blow when they go . That is an amazing game you play with your dogs, a cat will fight for its life and a dog will give its life to get a cat. I hope you find peace over your loss and your other dog lives to hunt with you again.

Sorry to hear about this. We dont think about it often but this hunting we do can have tragic consequenses at times. A buddy of smoothbors lost a dog after xmas this year to a bear, while they were on a cat. Last thing you would expect at that time of year.

Sorry, I missed this post. Cut collars and vests are mostly used on hog hunting dogs. Perhaps it would help prevent losses on cougar hunts too...

Here is a web site where you can see some.
