The ones that smelled a bit was the mallard and sawbill. I didn't notice any smell on the others.

Not many rotten salmon around dec. 23? Hmmmmm not what I've experienced, had both fishy ducks and a fishy lab this time of the year.

I used to hunt the Harrison a ways upstream from the highway bridge late in the season often during the 70's-90's, doing quite well, but would leave the mallards alone because many of them were fishy. If they have been eating fish carrion, they will wipe their beak under their wing (armpit) so it's just a matter of smelling under their wings to determine if they're good.

I always thought ducks ate the fish eggs and not dead fish. And they only do it if there's nothing else around to eat.
