View Full Version : How wide is this buck??

Outside to outside how wide is this big fella? Got to within 850yds and these pics are through my spotter. His mass doesn't really come through in these pics because his antlers are so damn big but he looked like he had beer cans growing out of his head. The couple times he got up and moved or switched positions in his bed he looked like a horse moving around on the hillside. Got to spend 4 unforgettable hours on the same mountain with him, mostly trying to grow another 1" point on him somewhere but to my dismay he was a monster 3 point. Dismay has turned to satisfaction to actually spend a few hours with a true giant.

Never judge width from the back. With the ears pinned back, they always look wide. From the front view, I'd say he's 27-28.

Frenchie,
Going away always deceives. That is why so many people get jacked up and pull the pin when they jump a muley out of a bed and then have incredible ground shrinkage mourning. :)

I think 28 is a good estimate and is sort of where I had him at, I also had the luxury of watching him for 4 hours. The ears pinned back thing is sort of why I posed the question instead of just posting the pictures. Saying that though I don't think it would be too much of a stretch to put a tape on him at the magic 30" mark. This was a HUGE bodied buck with a big roman nose and a big fat head so those ears might be just a tad bigger than the norm.

i estimated a buck at 28... turns out i was wrong and he went 31. field judging can be decieving but with enough practice you start to figure things out. would have been nice just to watch him for 4 hours, even though you couldnt shoot. i wonder if that deer will ever be a four point.

That big tree hes standing beside is a preety good estimate, you should go back and measure the diameter of the tree and maybe take an inch or two off of that!

29- 30 inches my guess. Saw a tank like that a number of years ago now up in the 3-30. Same problem, couldn't grow a fourth point. :( Sure tried hard though!!

You could put a yard stick in between those tines, those ears are 24 wide.

26-27" would be my guess

That was my gut feeling too. I gave it an extra inch in my guess just so the 30-33 inch guessers wouldn't feel so bad. ;)

Either way, cool pics, thx for sharing. I hunt one area that's crawling with massive 3 points. I would love an Any Buck November one year to clean some out.

His ears in the face on pic measure out about 20"-22" max at the angle they're positioned, not laying staright out. I'd say he's about 27"-28" outside spread. The base of his ears are about the size of beer cans and the antler bases are half that, don't think his antlers are all that heavy, honestly I think they are fairly light in circumference. I think he's a younger buck, maybe put on some mass in a year or two. Think he'd suffer some ground shrinkage right now. Nice buck but not a monster just yet

Hell by the time I tell the Grandkiddies I'll have shot him and traded his horns in on a new tractor!!

I watched this buck for 4 hours at 60x and the only opinion I will argue with from all the ones made here is that this was a young buck. Unfortunately his best years are behind him, this buck was definitely a senior.

grin - you nailed it with the ears pinned back facing away shot giving the impression its wider than it is. He's a nice buck and its cool seeing those photo's!

Cool old buck on his way down the hill for sure. Probably would have been a real cranker a couple of years ago. Current max spread is someswhere in the 27.5" range. Current tooth condition is somewhere very close to the gum line.

Mulie bucks, and a fair number of women should not be judged from the back.

It really is too bad that deer aren't like sheep in that great trophy quality comes with old age.

BTW Taxis dig capes from big old bucks should you ever have to put an old time out of his misery!

Id say 28" aprox, based on the ears being about 7 inches and you can fit 4 ears in there roughly

Well if you ever get back in there again, measure the tree he is next to in the first picture !
Nice buck ! Did you manage to pull the trigger on a BT this year ?
LOL just read the tread see the tree has already being mentioned !
