This thread is a week and a half late, but we moved recently and just got a reliable source of internet hooked up, so I was waiting to post this till that was all done.
My son drew the LEH for any bull in region 3-? for the month of november. We did alot of hunting and didn't see any bulls. The month was coming to a close and I was getting concerned. We tried several different spots, all with good sign, but only cows were to be seen. On Sunday the 25th we finally tried a spot that we hadn't hunted yet this year. The snow was getting deep and I could barely get my ATV up the road. I ended up parking the quad and we walked up a road to a small cut block.
The sky was blue and clear and the sun was shining. We hadn't seen any track or sign of any animal for a km or so. As we came into the cut, I saw some snowed in track. The walking was tough, I wish I had my snowshoes with me, but we pressed on. We got up a little farther and saw some day old track. We got to the landing and I was just starting to glass the cut when my son says, "there's a moose......it's a bull!!". He had just stood up from his bed and was heading up the hill. I cow called to him and he stopped broadside. My son let out a shot and I could tell the bull was hit. He continued up the hill so I called to him again, everytime i cow called he would stop and give a good shot opp. A few more shots later and he was done, a look at the watch told us it was 7:40 in the morning. Without a range finder I figured the distance to be between 250 to 300 yards.
We hiked up the hill and the real work began. 3 hours later and we had him at the edge of the landing where we had started, thankfully it was mostly downhill dragging that we had to do. I knew I couldn't get my quad in there to pull him out, so we headed down the hill to my bro-in-laws place. He lent us his Skandic and we went back up and made a easy pull out to the vehicle. All in all a good day with a 3x3 moose for our efforts!!
Not a bad season for us. A cow elk for me, a calf elk for my son and a moose. Now with just days left in the season for deer, we are still hoping to score on a buck.
