I was looking forward to the trip all year. got to camp friday night, was going to stay for 10 days. Got this guy on monday. I was 3 hours hike from camp. Stopped to un-freeze my camelback straw. While i was sitting going through my bag, i felt something to my left. There he was 240 yards, i didnt have a range finder but ranged it after. Down he goes. I called a buddy on the radio to help short 1/4 him, then let him go back to hunting while i packed him out, it took 2 trips and all day. But that is how i wanted it. Very rewarding.
Then after doing a bit of research decided to try to euro mount him, i think it turned out pretty good. Boiled, then pressure washed, then soaked in simple green to degrease, then vol 40 to whiten the skull.
Now just need a good plaque. I want a nice wall mount that angles the head out. Any good places locally in van?

You just scape the brain out with a knife or something long and slim that will fit where the spinal cord goes in. Once its boiled it comes out pretty easy, you can sometimes just shake it out. You gotta get way up in the nose too. its as fun as it sounds... cheers

A buddy told me to but a piece of wire in a drill to mash the brains up. Just put a bend in the working end, insert, and giver. Hit with the power sprayer and it all comes out.

Not sure if it's my Italian roots, but the euro mount is far and away my preference over other styles. And a nice buck to seal the deal!

Good work!

I put a little dish soap like Dawn in with it.Brought it to a boil and then down to just barely simmer for 5 hrs ,cleaned most off and threw in a little bit more and cleaned off.Used an air nozzle w two drilled holes in back of skull:had to have a shower after i pulled the trigger on the air nozzle(LOL).I didnt bleach because I like the natural colors.

Congrats on the buck!

As for mounting, I think this is the sharpest looking thing going. I have several, they look awesome.

great deer.
wow, a three hour hike to camp......twice.
that's twelve hours of trudging.
woulda been easier to knock on some wood and call in a squatch to pack it for you.
you musta been out of kokanee and jack links though.

nice mount, turned out really nice.

Nice, I am in the middle of 2 euro mounts right now. I boiled them each for a few ours and then scraped as much meat out as i could... Unfortunately work and life has gotten in the way so they are hanging in the back yard for a couple days until I get back to them. For a plaque I want to do a natural looking mount so I am going to find a nice big chunk of red cedar and slice off a 1.5" to 2" cookie with a chainsaw, maybe angle cut it so it is elongated, and leave it unfinished.

I power washed it, stuck the nozzle right in the back of the skull , everything comes out the nose. Power washing works amazing. I didnt have to scrape anything or use pliers or nothing... just keep spraying, it will all come off.
Also while boiling ( mine was more of a simmer, i was using a electric element and it was too small to boil my large pot) i just used dawn dish soap to help degrease the skull.

Looks good! Where do you get the volume 40?

I got volume 40 from the beauty supply place on kingsway in burnaby. $15 i only used about 1/4 of the bottle.
The beauty people call it a "developer" but yeah its basically just strong hydrogen peroxide. Your local hair sttylist could order you some as well.

The buck and the mount both looks great. Your euro turned out very good did you tape the antler bases while boiling?
Mike

dog812
12-02-2012, 10:20 PM
No, i only taped them while whitening. I dont notice any discoloration. I dont know if tape would really stop water from creeping in there. Especially after boiling/simmering for hours.
