Well all tagged out on elk and deer.......my season is over and now just memories, pictures and 2 full freezers of meat to remind me of 2012.
For my last day of hunting whiteys before seasons end i planned on hitting one of my treestands that i'd been seeing deer daily. I got there at around 6:20am and soon realized that the wind wasn't cooperating which would make it a long shot on seeing something come my way. I hung around until around 7:45am then decided to go for a hike up an old trail i knew of. Around 1/2 km of hiking uphill, i walked down a short spur which cut across the mountain side. I walked in around 100 yds and heard 3 stomps from an alarmed deer. I scanned ahead to see a doe around 30 yds straight ahead of me just behind a tree. I held up and could hear another deer running uphill towards her. As soon as i seen the deer i could tell it was a buck, but i was looking for a mature deer so had to hold off from shooting to give myself time to determine its size. OK, he's a shooter, now i'm watching him chase the doe uphill waiting to get an open shooting lane. It doesn't happen, i've got him in my scope but just can't pull the trigger because of all the brush inbetween us. What do i do now???? I know there's a logging road that side hills the mountain around another 1/2 km above me. I double-time it up the trail to try and get into a position where i think the deer will cross. I come to a spot which i think puts me somewhat above where i'd seen the deer, sit down and start scanning up and down the road. I'd been sitting for around 1/2 hour and tell myself i'll wait another 30 minutes before i head back down. Within minutes i see a deer jump out on the road around 170 yards away. I quickly confirm that this is my deer and fire off a shot as he heads for the high side of the road. I hit him high in the spine and dropped him, but could see him lift his head on the ground, i quickly fire off a finishing shot........damn, split his skull. Oh well, i got a great deer on the ground on my final day of hunting.....It was an amazing hunt, life is good.
He's a 5x7 with some cool junk. He's actually got 2 main beams growing off his right side, complete with its own brow tine and another scoreable point. Sorry about the crappy pics, didn't have a camera in my pocket up the mountain.
On another note, I'll be looking to buy a nice cape from a late season buck if anybody has one........no pre-rut capes please.
