We decided to stay closer to home for our mule deer hunt this year. Due to work and stuff everyone else bailed and it was just my Dad and I. Quality bonding time at its best. We brought the crib board and lots of good food. We had plenty of room in the big tent.

Dads hips are bugging him lately so on the first day he found a nice spot to sit near camp and wait for a 4 point to walk by. It was fogged in pretty good but I took off to check out some new country. I got bored and played with my new camera a little. The fog was freezing onto the dried fireweed and looked cool. I was following some tracks in the 1’’ of fresh snow and walked up on a small fork. That was the only deer spotted on the first day.

Day 2 was socked in solid. Dad went to his blind and I headed up the mountain a little south of a big bluffy area that I got a glimpse of yesterday. I went up quite a ways and found lots of tracks but couldn’t see more that 60-80 yds in the fog. I sat for a while and finally the fog lifted for a little while. I stood up and put my pack on and had just started slowly moving up the hill when some deer took off above me. I blew my grunt call a couple of times and they settled down a bit. A small 4 point, a fork, and a couple of does slowly moved away, then the fog came back in. That was about it for day 2. I played with my camera some more at the base of the mountain.

Day 3 was clear! I headed toward the bluffy area and started glassing. Before long I spotted a bunch of deer. A fork was hounding a doe, then a small 4 point put the run on him and around and around they went until they disappeared over the ridge. I headed north along the bottom of the mountain then cut up the hill to get a bettor look at the area the deer disappeared into. On my way up a tall 3 point walked right into me. I got my camera out and managed 1 decent photo.
I looped around and headed down and back toward camp, keeping an eye on the ridge the deer went over this morning. There was a deer then 2 deer and one looked pretty good. Out with the spotting scope. Nice back forks and smaller fronts. Pretty tall. I watched them for a while then they went over the ridge. Still no deer sightings for Dad.

Day 4 I suggested that Dad come over and sit below the bluffy hill. There was lots of tracks around there. We found a nice spot for him to sit, then I headed to the base of the hill within range of where I’d seen the buck yesterday afternoon. I got a little look at the hill before the fog came back in and saw nothing. I tried to wait it out but started getting to cold. I decided to head up the mountain on the ridge next to the one that the deer were on yesterday. If the fog lifted I would have a great vantage point to check out the area. As I headed up I saw more and more fresh tracks and droppings. I slowed right down and looked hard all around into the fog. Visibility was about 80 yds max. I crept up the hill slowly stopping every few steps and looking. Suddenly through the trees there was a buck! He was looking my way. I backed up 2 steps to a small tree, leaned my gun against it and found him in my scope. He turned to look at the doe that just got up. Looks decent. BANG! I’ll take luck any day.
Meanwhile back at the deer blind, Dad was scanning left to right and back left again when suddenly THERE’S A BUCK! 25 feet away.
As he tells it.
I was so surprised I fumbled with my binoculars then my gun. I finally got him in my scope and he was quartering away hard. I waited for him to stop and bloop, bloop, bloop over the ridge he went. GONE! I laughed out loud. Buck fever at 72. Gotta love it.
