I have been involved in a few situations where a animal is spined or mabey only hit a small part of vitals or even a perfect heart lung shot but when you walk up the deer is still kickin.
One guy I was with likes to walk away and let them expire.another guy line to cut the throat which I think let's the air out and a bit slow death. I put another shot in the boiler room but it wrecks meat if your angle is a little off.

I also think this part of the hunt can make or break a young new hunter. There is a big difference between bang flop and bang chase stab stab death bleat gurgle gurgle kick kick flop.

I know it's a little gruesome and not the prettiest part of the sport but I think it important to finish off a animal quickly as possible.

What is the cleanest quickest way to finish off an animal.

Great question RBTW, i, when needed, put one to the head if safe to do so.

Shot to the head or throat it either way wrks an imo is humane leaving it there to expire works but it can take awhile if your not comfortable with shooting it again just slit his throat if its safe to do so ..

If a finisher is needed and it's a doe or non-trophy buck, just put one in the brain. If you want the rack or the regs require it, place a shot into the spot where the head joins the neck through the atlas joint. Both are instant kills, game over. Cutting throats on living game animals? Don't even bother as it just gets the adrenaline flowing even worse which makes the meat taste like shit and can be down right dangerous to the person trying to stick 'em. Stunning domestic steers or hogs with a ball-peen hammer then sticking to bleed them out is a different kettle of fish, boyz & girls.

Let the air out of him. Put it right on the ribs, make sure the shoulder is not in front or behind or it will blood shock all to hell. I had a moose get up after a shot to the head with a 7 mag.

You didn't shoot it properly. There is not a moose in the world that is going to get up after you shoot it in the brain. Head shot or in the neck at the base of the head.

Wow, pure ignorance at its best.

I would say head shot

If you hit it in the hear and/or lungs it'll bleed out and die. If you aren't comfortable with that walk away from it and give it time.

Other than that I like to use a good judo shop or a machete if available

Lunge at it with a 12 inch Buck knife, impale the throat and try to get some of the spurting blood on you then immediately cut open chest cavity to rip out the heart and eat the still warm twitching heart raw!! And make sure your friends get pics and post them...

But if you're too tame for that, just put a round where the neck meets the head. You'll take out the brain stem... done. Then rip out heart, etc...

Wow....starting to get nasty. We've all made sub-optimal shots. Deny it and you're f.o.s.
+1 for the head shot ( barring that for reasons given the atlas/axis/brainstem shot )
+1 for the dessert however

I shot a whitetail, came within 20 yards of it and it jumped up and started hobbling away. So i put one through the rear end, dropped it with that but it was still alive and trying to get up so I drilled it through the head to finish it. On a nice rack though, right where the neck meets the head will be an instant killshot with no damage.

Don't do the Rambo thing. Another bullet safely applied will do, even in the chest if you don't want to muck up the head.

A humane dispatch is needed ASAP-a shot to the brain between or behind the eyes whether the animal is moving or not.

Remember this story from last November.

“This is a tragic story, and a good lesson for all hunters. The next time you walk up on a wounded whitetail, don’t try to save a bullet or broadhead by pulling out your knife and trying to do the job yourself. Just make a good follow-up shot and be done with it.”

I made the mistake of putting the muzzle directly on the skull once.
Dont do that.

It would be nice if we were allowed to carry a .22 LR sidearm for putting down animals. An old German guy told me that is allowed in Germany.

In the uk, where they banned handguns in 1997, a growing number of deer hunters are being allowed to carry a 9mm or .38 handgun for "humane dispatch". Need to be restricted to single or sometimes two shots. If they can do it why can't we given our vastly more liberal gun laws???

shoot your trophy billy goat right between the eyes! haha, no just wait it out and let it expire on its own, or sneak up on it and shoot it again. Meat spoilage is typical unless you are confident in head shots.
