Update Below - Another Buck added

For the guys who don't want to read my story here he is, my first whitetail buck, killed on november 12th. Couldn't be happier!

Following is my story and some of my trail camera pictures.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/403076_10151237353472088_2041079951_n.jpg

UPDATE - Here is the whitetail I took in Saskatchewan on the 25th of november. Saw some bigger deer and had planned on holding out, but I happened to be sitting in the blind with my dad on this morning when this buck walked out, and since I hadn't killed a deer with my dad since my first deer 8 years ago I figured he would be a nice buck to take together, and I'm glad I did. Can't wait to go back next, lots of deer and lots of fun.

It all started a couple years ago when I saw "gbear" threads on baiting whitetails here on HBC. I thought to myself if I ever live in the peace that is something I've got to try! Well as luck would have it I finished my schooling and moved here to dawson creek. So now it was my turn to give it a try!

First, to the guys who turn their nose to baiting, I challenge them to give it a try, I have never worked so hard for a deer in my life! It is a huge time commitment and with grain/cameras/batteries/blinds and gas every 3 days it can get expensive, but the results are well worth it. I don't think I've ever had this much fun, I'm hooked!

Anyways I starting baiting around the 20th of October. I had found two spots of crown land that I figured would be worth a try, as I did not want to deal with the hassle of permission. They were out of the way and surrounded by agricultural land at opposite sides of town. I was going in pretty well blind, having never hunted these areas or even seen a deer for that matter, more or less I was going on the general areas being whitetail country and advice from others.

I set up the cameras and laid down some oats and barley and left them for a week. To my excitement upon my return both baits had been found and all my feed was gone. I checked my cameras and had lots of pictures of does. No bucks on the cameras yet but I knew, if there were does there would be bucks.

So I continued baiting and checking my cameras and as we got closer to november the bucks started to show. I had one in particular I was hoping to target.

He was a 6x5 with nice chocolate coloured antlers.

So with that I decided this bait would be the one I would hunt. So I made my way out to spend my first evening in the blind. I had a few does and fawns come out to feed and a spiker. After about 20 minutes, they became alert and left the bait. 5 minutes later a buck strolled in. He was a nice 5x5 and I did not have any trail camera pictures of him. I was in turmoil, he was an awesome looking buck, but not the one I wanted, or did I, I had never even seen him before. Either way I made the tough decision to let him walk after 10 minutes of standing broadside at 30 yards.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/60639_10151208279972088_264858411_n.jpg

No more deer came out that night, but on the way out I grabbed the memory card and when I got home had a good luck at the buck I had let walk.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/549013_10151212483597088_1471012882_n.jpg

After looking at the pictures I determined him to be a younger buck, but something I would consider taking near the end of my week off if the other buck didn't show.

I hunted this spot for several days seeing many does and younger bucks (of which you will see at the end of the thread) as well as the 5x5 he made an appearance almost everyday. I was checking my camera for night activity and hoping to see signs of the 6x5. 6 days went by and I had not gotten any more pictures of him. I only had two more days left to hunt, as work and a saskatchewan trip were planned for the rest of november. So I was getting ready to take the 5x5 if the opportunity presented itself.

The next morning I decided I should go rebait my other stand and check the cameras there to make sure I wasn't missing anything before hunting the afternoon. Up to this point the only buck there that got my attention was this 4x4

https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/26652_10151212477892088_440946294_n.jpg

Well when I pulled the card there was a new buck that got my attention.

He was a good looking 5x5, but with only 2 days left to hunt I had to make the decision to stick to my other bait, as I knew the other 5x5's pattern and had a good chance at taking him. I went and checked the cameras at this location again tonight and he has been at my bait every night with 20-40 minutes left of legal shooting light. Hopefully he makes the winter and will be even bigger, and on my hit list next year!

So with my final day to hunt arriving, I made my way to my stand at 11am. The 5x5 had been coming out to the bait between 2-3pm daily. So I settled in anticipating his arrival. I was really excited and quite nervous as I realized if he made his way out tonight I was finally going to pull the trigger. Well 2 o'clock roles around, nothing, 3 o'clock nothing, 4 o'clock nothing. I was starting to get down on myself thinking I would not be getting my first whitetail after all. well at 415pm 2 does made their way to the bait. After 5 minutes of feeding I heard a grunt come from behind my blind and the sound of a buck chasing some does. 3 more does came crashing out in front of me, and soon all 5 bolted from the bait. I knew a buck was coming as I could here him grunting all the way, I just wasn't sure which buck it would be.

As luck would have it, it was the 5x5 he stopped at the bait pile and I was ready with my gun in hand. I watched him through my scope one last time and pulled the trigger, he leaped into the air and took off downhill. I knew it was a solid hit so I immediately got out of my blind and followed the blood trail. 30 yards from the bait my buck was down. :D It was a pretty awesome feeling walking up to my first whitetail buck, all my hard work payed off!

https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/525624_10151213966907088_1450783183_n.jpg

I got him loaded onto my quad and made my way back to the truck.

My quest for my first whitetail buck was over! I didn't get the 6x5 but hopefully he will make the winter and be back next year. It was a little disappointing to have to punch my tag with over 15 days left in the season, but a trip to saskatchewan for whitetails was planned and I am looking forward to it.

Next year I plan on taking a week off in November so that I will have 3 weeks to hunt whiteys! I'm already looking forward to it!

Very nice buck, don't know if any asked but what trail cam are you using?

Moultrie D-65's from Canadian tire, on sale for 119 from 200.

They work great, but bettery life isn't the best and C batteries are a pain in the ass. I'm going to look into the solar charging as appearently they work well.

Very cool I've always wanted to try that, congrats on a great buck. Just out of curiosity what did the feed cost and how much did you use?

I used Oats Barley and Wheat. Almost any grain works, from a feed store or the co-op it averages 10 bucks a bag, and witht them going through roughly a bag a day, it can get expensive. Luckily here in Dawson Creek there are lots of farmers with grain bins, and if ya get to know a few you can bag it yourself for a couple bucks.

Great buck, congratulations.

I think I will grab a trail cam for next year.

Just curious, what kind of bait did you use and how long have you been setting it out for ?

Oats Barley and Wheat all work well. I began putting it out in mid October, in less than a week they had found the bait and ate it all. After that I re-baited every 4-5 days while putting 2 bags out at a time. Everytime I would return the feed would be all gone.
