View Full Version : How many bear coats do you need to make a man's jacket?

I want to go bear hunting next year mostly to get the fur for a coat. I'm 6'8" tall with an 84" wingspan so usually need a lot of material to make any kind of clothing. How many bear coats do you think I'd need for a short coat with a good collar on it? Something to keep me warm in the winters (finally).

Also, I heard the meat tastes like crap, is that true? Hate to have to kill such a big beast or two and not get some food out of it. I am guessing the dogs at the SPCA would like it though right? What do you all do with the meat? I'd imagine lots of you don't like it.

Oh yeah and are Hornady's LeverEvolution 45/70 rounds good enough for a bear? I'm thinking they must be but never hunted bear before.

Ya your a big fella so I'd have no idea how many pelts it would take. But spring is good , lots love it but I'm not a fan of the roasts and steaks but I do enjoy the sausage.

Gatehouse: I haven't thought that far ahead, got any suggestions? I've always been underwhelmed by all but one tailor in town but he doesn't deal with fur clothing, haha.

Bear meat can be delicious! Stay away from salmon streams in the fall!!! Try to hunt where they eat lots of green grass, forbs, or ideally, apples and peaches. Some of the best meat I have ever eaten came off an orchard bear.

Call a furrier. We're hunters, not tailors :D

WAG here but I say 12 would do it. Do you want a high class fur garment or just a bush man cape of sorts ?
12 would feed a few dogs well for a while.

12 bears?! Lol, yeah right. And I just want something warm, I got no reason to look classy so I don't bother trying.

I bet you could do a mid thigh length coat with 4-6 good sized bear hides. Maybe even less?

ya real men wear bear fur coats..
but at 6'8 reminds me of russell peters in china--- "36 is too big! You too fat. Lose some weight fatboy. Come back when you 30, 32 the most!!!"
hehe, just shoot big bears- maybe an 8 foot grizz then source a cub or find a calf moose for the soft trim, cuz real man dont use stuff like mink for coats-thad be too girly..

Judging by some of those pics, you might only need 2? Full length coat for one dude is 16 beaver pelts. Bears are usually much larger.

We can't possible list who can do this work.....not a site sponsor/ there must me a special list that can only be shared via PM...lock em down...lol

A nice utilitarian fur coat would be awesome. I've often wondered about boots/moccasins from deer hide. Does anyone here use them for hunting? Pros/Cons?

i'd imagine it would all depend on the size of the bear.
black or grizz?
whoever said 12 must be thinkin' cubs.:-D
remember, you'll need enough for mitts as well, and maybe even a hat.
and a nice contrasting dall sheep ball sack for a handy coin purse.

concider that the prime fur would be just a strip from the back , it would take more than a few families to do it for sure.

that's the sissy way and way too much a waste.
two big bears, cut off at the lower legs, sew together facing each other, front legs are now sleeves, cut off one head and the other is your hood. done.

For some reason I can't get the curser back on the page to type after pasting a picture. That pic was from Winnipeg Fur Dressers.
Careful where you wear that hat. Not worried about the antis...just bullets.
