This morning i left the house well before first light to go make an attempt at a last chance region 8 mulie. I didn't make it very for before side tracking to go look for whitetail like i usually end up doing. I walked about a half km into a good spot and sat down. Not long till i spot some deer, 2 of which were smaller bucks that I wasnt gonna try and shoot. After a solid 5 minutes of sparring and other activities that deer do they all bolt and i catch glimpse of 2 coyotes. Now i'm ticked off lol.

I decided to bolt home for the call, decoy, video camera, and the .223. I started back in and bumped into the coyote again but it was in a full sprint throught the trees. A few more minutes of slow quiet walking and i get to where i want to set up. Immediately i hear a branch break so i go for the video camera. Too late coyote pokes her head over the ridge and I figure i'm busted. Then another set of ears start to come over the ridge so I slowly shoulder my rifle and Bang......flop!

Another deer went running from the direction the coyotes were headed so i will credit myself for saving that mulie doe!

Are you keeping the coyote fur - for tanning? Are you eating coyote meat?

I shot it with a 30-06 at 20 yards and im not that into meat more just keeping the population at bay.

I hit a coyote about 3 weeks ago with a 225g TTSX from my 338wm at about 40 yards broadside.

That combo does make the whole front half disappear :)

I am interested in Taxidermy. Just wondered if you kept the skin. I have one coyote skin.

Meat - I heard that trappers use coyote meat for trapping lynx and bobcats.

Not on my line....Beaver meat is king.

Even the scavengers have class, as coyotes are the last to get eaten off my bait piles as well...

Dead is dead and good for you for stroking a yote while deer hunting, more hunters should take this approach! Right on!

Ya I have lots of meat already so I would rather keep predator numbers Down this.

IMO its never too early that coyote could be the difference of my Buck living or dying and if I take care of the area I hunt it will take care of me.

i saw two on my last trip into the bush a couple days ago.
tried hard to get a pic but they were too sneaky.
very nice fur it looks like right now.
hoping to get some good shots, with my camera.
i'm not killing anything i won't be utilising.

Let the air out a Yote on the weekend with a 7mm frontal shot, effective but not pretty. This one came into a doe bleat. With the snow recently it is pretty evident that the predator ratio is climbing in the West Koots. 2 days of hiking and 50 miles on the quad turned up 3 sets of deer tracks, a few moose and elk. Too many coyote tracks to count in several areas and one large dog set, which can only assume was a wolf. Got enough grub this year so it is game on for Wile E. Just curious what ACME calls people have had luck with?

I use a Yella Fella, and drop every Yote I can get the Crosshairs on.
The camera comes out after.... :D

Also I find it comical that so many people complain about not seeing as many big game animals as in the past yet they wont put the time in to control the population of predators. This is a big reason as to why i keep the spots i hunt to myself(a few good buddies will be coming to a good white tail spot of mine this year....one being coach who can hopefully connect with the large 5x5 i missed during bow season)

RiverOtter

They don't even need to put in extra time pred hunting, just shoot what they see while they're out anyway....

Man is not gonna decimate a wolf/yote population with rifles and hiking boots, nor even come close.......FACT

It's amazing how bold those little fackers can be. I watched a solo coyote chase a doe around out in region 3 last year. He almost took some lead - but there was a couple bucks nearby that I didn't want to spook. I had a conversation with a CO a couple years back who told me about a coyote den he'd found with remains from 13 different deer in it. His advice - take them out when they give you the chance.

Good shooting, 604Redneck.

River Otter you are correct that rifle and hiking boots will not control the predator population. Either thru the decreased food source or large scale human control is required to have any noticable affect. Shooting the odd predator probably just prolongs the natural balancing act of mother nature. But as long there is lead in the air there is still hope for a better deer season next year, and some of us need to keep our shooting skills up for the zombie invasion.

Ur right it wont get rid of the population but shooting 10 coyotes this year in the small area I am hunting will deter them from hunting there. I know if I watched a buddy get shot everytime I went to McDonald's I would stop eating there!
