That I don't know.

Rather a youngish looking fellow in the pix (kind of hard for me - an OLD One - to judge though... LOL!) so thought he may well be...

Usually something of that caliber has a way of surfacing. Hoping here...

Thanks i appreciate it. if you want i can email u the pics and u can post em? After chasing 6 bucks around for a couple hours in the mornin me and my bud chris decided to give the der a chance to calm down. As we came back to the spot i spotted a 2 point on a side hill and decided to follow. he brought me to an ovegrown trail which i continued on till the end then turned back. on my way back down i seen the 2 point again. as i continued down the trail i just happened to glanse up to my left and there he was, starring me down like a bull about to charge. I instantly drew back my bow, but i had no shot due to the fir trees infront. i paced backwards about 10 steps and had a lane 1 foot x 1 foot, i placed the 60 yard pin right in the sweet spot and released. all i seen was the arrow clear the trees and hear the unmistakeable thud as the broadhead passed through (shot was a lil high) and he took off. I then dropped to my knees so overcome with buckfever i could barely spit a word out. Chris and I searched for 3 hours with no blood trail just 2 crows that would circle every once in a while. I then decided to go with my gut and follow the crows. i went up hill about 800 yards and followed a platue for another 400 until i spotted the 2 point again this time with 2 does down hill just a bit. As i walked down to them maybe 50 yards away the 2 point and 1 doe walked away but one doe stayed. As i got 20 yards from he she walked off and a magpie flew off the ground. i instantly went over there and to my complete surprise the buck laid there dead he decided to go up hill instead of down. I never realized he was that big until i seen him laying there. He weighed about 400 pounds and has 7 4/8 inch bases.

Dude, congrats! "Wow" does not do that buck justice but I'm at a loss for better words!

One thing I can say is that it is encouraging to see bucks like that coming out of southern BC. I'm not particularly a trophy hunter, but sometimes it seems so fruitless looking for a mature deer, when you go years not hearing (first hand reports) about anything over 170-175. Regarding even that class of deer, hunters are so effective these days and so much terrain is heavily accessible that you start to wonder if they are starting to become, with seriously few exceptions, a thing of the past. I would be exceptionally curious to know the age of your deer!

Another curiosity you might be able to answer for me, is do you think that is a bush buck, or would you guess based on where you got it that it would have had access to a lot of agricultural crops (alphalpha, etc)?

It must be a good feeling to literally make deer hunters all over the world green with envy!

gameslayer

Great to see a young guy going hard, and enjoying hunting.

keaton17
11-10-2012, 12:19 AM
i felt the same thing. The key is to get away from the other hunters and walk into where the deer feel their safe, but these areas usaually arent easy to find. This deer had access to alphalfa and judging by his fat content he took advantage of it

WOW!!!!!!.....major congratulations man!!!...that is a massive pig of a buck, you have accomplished the feat that many others dream about. Enjoy.

"all i seen was the arrow clear the trees and hear the unmistakeable thud as the broadhead passed through (shot was a lil high) and he took off."...OH YEAH! that's the feeling I live for. Every time I walk past my big buck on the wall I can't help but stop and admire him and relive some memories from that hunt, and that was twelve years ago.

Great live pics! Nice to see a before to go along with the after. Anyone pick up any previous year's sheds off this buck? With the mass he carries down low, he probably ain't a younger buck.

That deer looks so fat in those field pics that you probably could have outrun him across the field :-D.

Regardless, it is interesting to see the steady supply of high-quality feed that (along with age and good genes) it takes to grow a buck like that. When you consider what a bush buck would have to do to get that kind of nutrient intake, it's no wonder they are less likely to attain those sizes (not to say they don't exist though). Another factor is that ag-feeding deer are often protected by the restricted access created by private parcels, which helps them survive longer than many of their bush counterparts and long enough to put some heavy bone on their heads. If that thing lived in Monte Hills it probably would have been whacked as a 2 point!

Some very hard core trophy mule deer hunters have spent decades in pusuit of such a buck.
For you to pull it off at this stage of your hunting career is wonderful.
For you to do it with a bow is amazing.
The high water mark you have set will be tough to replicate.
Sure you are up for it though!!!
Good on you and congratulations.

Awfully Quick turn-around on that. I've submitted teeth before, and it usually takes months before you hear anything back.

They must have a "special interest" in this buck, probably due to his size...

they take a tooth from the front of the lower jaw, grind it down and do an aging process. your local wildlife branch will do it for you. Hmm, thanks. And congrats on the bow harvest. The reason I ask, is that you can only estimate at best the age of an ungulate beyond 2 yrs old. There are no rings on a tooth. Grinding it down might tell you how much enamel is left, but there are no rings. It's more accurate if we look at the gums. But even that is a function of what they've been eating. No doubt he's a mature buck and probably is close to 6, but saying he's six is probably a best guess only.

Not at all trying to be rude here by any means, but where did you get that from?

Aging mammals by tooth analysis (cementum annuli aka growth rings) has been around for a considerably long period of time. I used this method myself in the case of Beluga Whales in the Arctic. And, in general, it is a fair bit more accurate than relying on wear patterns when dealing with ungulates.

Here's a little background information on that:

http://www.deerage.com/faqs.htm

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jwmg.133/abstract

Wildlife managers have been relying on this type of analysis for years. I suspect their analysis of the buck in question is probably very close.

Cheers,
Nog

Absolutely! I'd be hunting him with my 300WSM and 130gr TTSX! :)

The reason I asked if it was a bow only zone is just because of that...Most guys would be packing a rifle. Seems like many of the really big animals that get taken with a bow are in GOS, by bowhunters that don't put the bow away just because bow season is over.

Cheers,
Nog No worries, not offended. I too always thought this was the case. I decided to bring it up with my dentist a couple of years ago. He happens to be a RMEF Lifetime member, German (I believe that applies), and a very avid outdoorsman and hunter. He took a lot of time to show me how all of these approaches, simply are not an accurate determination of age using teeth. Yes, we can determine the age of an ungulate up to 'mature' but once they are an adult aging on teeth is not possible. Take some time and ask your Dentist the next time you are in for some work. There are no rings on ungulate teeth. You have enamel, dentum and pulp (in the case of an immature animal you have milk).
