Headed out last weekend with a buddy of mine in search for maybe a couple small buffalo. Maybe a cow or calf.
We ended up cutting this guys track.
It was a pretty awesome hunt. We followed his tracks for about 1 1/2-2kms. While he milled around feeding. We kept checking the piles of crap. First the we're very frozen. As we moved along they became softer and softer. Untill the we're pretty much steaming. Becoming excited with every little nook and crany we peeked into. We finally heard some rustling. We stopped and listened for a bit. Thinking we had spooked him we waited for a few minutes for him to maybe calm down.
We started after him thinking he would be on alert.
100 yards later just as I climbed over a hogs back I saw him bedded down in a meadow about 100 yards away. I quickly motioned to my buddy to get up beside me. The buffalo stood staring right at us. I whispered as soon as he turns let's hammer him.
A split second later he did just that.
Boom boom almost in sync.
Buffalo down. So much for just a small one.
Now the work begins.

It took us pretty near two days before we had the entire thing hanging back home.
We were able to get the quad to within a half kilometer of where the majestic lay.

Let me tell you.
Those were the Hinds from hell. We packed every last bit of him out.
I would say we earned all of this meat. But I have a feeling it's going to be more of a punishment to eat this guy.

But I ensure you. He will not go to waste.
Next time anyone sees me ask for some pepperoni. I'm sure there will be plenty to go around.

Cheers !!!!

Man Trigger you guys are crazy!!!!. Thats one big Buff to be packing like that. Maybe a sled would have been easier?.. Anyway congrats on the Big Bugger.:-D Great pics by the way.
Whats the draw odds on that one if you don't mind me asking?.

seatoskymiles
11-07-2012, 12:10 PM
no draw odds, just have to be a resident of the Yukon and $10 gets you a tag

The pics of the head on your back definitely puts the size of the animals into perspective. Been up and fairly close to some of these things since my cousin in-laws family has a bison ranch but still never realized their true size comparativley.

up here all you need is to be a resident. go by the tag. $10. getting first nation permission on some of the settlement land gives you broader horizons.

The head and cape. hhmmmim guess 180-200 lbs.

We tried the taboggan. but this meadow that you see is one of many craters. alot of steep banks going in and out of these. and theres alot of blow down in the timber. with a good pack board and a solid state of mind you can getter done.

as for the head. now that i packed the bloody thing out of the bush. i have my cape from a buffalo i shot in pink mnt area a few years ago. its allready tanned and ready to be mounted so im going to use that cape with these horns. and then keep my other buffalo as a euro mount.
after all i dont think i have room on the wall for two buffalo shoulder mnts.

Thats a great thread trigger, that thing is a beast. Those packing pictures are priceless. How long do you have to be a Yukon resident before you can hunt there. Also can you use your bc hunter # and core as proof to get a licence, or are there more courses to take. So it looks like you need to target a A/Y moose and a big caribou next year or maybe one of those big Yukon stones we see pictures of. Congrats to you and your partner on getting a huge bull and doing all that work, and congrats to you on a great season thanks for posting.

Hey mike.

You have to have lived here for a year to be a resident. You need proof that you've lived here.
As for lisencing. If you were born befor 1987 you can just go and get a hunting license. No course necessary.
Although it is recommended. If you were born after 87. They offer a HEEDS course. Hunter , ethics , education, development, or something like that. Which is free. And in that course you get your hunting license as well as you PAL certificate.

Yukon really has it figured out up here.
