Like with most hunt this one began with the end of last years hunt, what we did wrong , what we could do to improve our chances and when to go. this year we changed tactics and bought an inflatable as we knew the river could be floated. Last year we missed the rut so this year saw us all packedup and on the road sept 16, three weeks earlier than last year.
day one- we made it to Makenzie and pulled over for the night as we wanted an early start
day two-we pulled in to our camp at 2 pm unloaded the quads for a late hunt\scout. here are a couple pics of the river and swamps around camp.

Day three- First day of actual hunting and our plan is to run up an old mine road that droped into the river vally about 40 km up river from our camp. We hunted on the way up looking for any fresh sign. not seeing much we went to look for an access point for us to hike our boat down to the river. Even with all our research the closest we could get to the river was about 1 km. Happy with our access we headed back to camp dreaming of a moose filled river valley.Next morning we woke to this

We were excited as this was the coldest morning 2C and we were heading for the river that we have been planing to float for almost a year. excited and a little worried cause we didnt what to expect on the river ( log jams, shallow water , water falls).Mom drove dad and myself in the truck over the moutian and droped us off for our hike to the river. pic of the boat on our backs

After a hour hike bushwacking down to the river we inflated our boat and got ready to go

day 6-back on the river we realize we made a huge mistake by not going back down the river yesterday as there was a ton of fresh tracks. Same routine down the river calling in all the same spots but not seeing or hearing any moose. back at camp that night we decided that we didnt have enough time on the river so we would take more time calling and sleep on the river and float the rest the next day.
day 7- we sleep in and prep for our over night on the river. By 3pm theboat is inflated and we are going down with high hopes.we went around three bend in the river and we see a big wet smear where a moose just walked out of the river , all excited we jump out and start calling but no answer . after about ten min dad went to circle around down the river bank.all of a sudden the bushes 30 yards in front of me come alive and the moose bolts. all we saw was 2seconds of paddle running befroe he hits the tree line and dissapears.we spent the rest of the day trying to call him back out to no avale.geting dark we set up camp on the riverand get ready for a long nihgt.

day8-we wake to about -5 and do some calling in case the bull had come back,no such luck! So we pack up camp and head down the river depressed thinking we might have messed up our only chance at a moose. Back in to the routine of floating and calling. we float about 40k and are realy depressed now as we have seen nothing. All of a sudden i spot a bull about 200 yards down river. not taking a chance of this one geting away dad takes the main river where the moose is heading and i run down a high water channel where the moose came from to block any retreat. then BOOM dad shoots ,i cant see the moose but when i walk out he is standing in the river looking towards dad 30 yards in front of me. with out thinking my gun comes up and BOOM . moose down .
