This animal killed 2 of our sheep and one goat. The pic is from almost 250 yards away. When I first saw the pic, I thought it was a small bear with long legs, but bears are pretty common here and I was assured it was not a bear, nor did it move like a bear, it moved like a cat. Apparently the shoulder area is much wider than shows in the pic, and the pic makes it look smaller than it is. It also looks a bit wolf like, but there is not much of a tail. The woman that took the pic has seen plenty of yotes, bears and wolves, and she didn't think it was any of those. I'm guessing it is a lynx (not common around here, especially at lower elevations) or a giant effing bobcat.

The tail was a stub, she saw it walking. Wasn't a long cougar tail or bushy yote tail or wolf tail. I did wonder if it was a cougar that had it's tail run over by a train, though. :)

I have seen wolves without tails. But just by looking at the position if the neck it looks like a cat. Only sure way is to shoot it an find out. If its destroying live stock, the sooner the better. I am sure it has attacked other poples.

I think it's a toad of a bobcat, like a 40lber. If I wasn't working I'd come run it just to see. Keep feeding it til Thursday :)

ok now I see irons pic, crazy. Maybe its a coy-dog but Whack it first and decide later!

Bottom line, the evidence is on the carcasses, get us pics!

Pemby_mess
11-04-2012, 12:49 PM
Definitely looks like a lynx to me, I don't what all these folks are saying it looks like a dog for. No such remblence to me. I've never seen a dogs with eyes glowing green either - usually yellow or red.

Ive seen a few lynx in the pemberton area and know a few people that do see bobcats around. It surprises me that one of these would take down a sheep though - go take a look at its tracks.

Gateholio
11-04-2012, 12:51 PM
The pic is from 10 days ago and the carcasses are gone, and we have moved the sheep out anyway, as that pasture was their summer home. They won't be back until next spring. However, the attack clearly came from the throat area, which makes me think it's a cat for sure, and not a dog. There was minimal amounts eaten on each one at first, all around the neck. Looked for scat near the carcases but saw none. Spent some time staking out the carcasses but nothing showed up during daylight other than crows.

Lots of bobcats around here, they are very common, but few would be big enough to take out a full grown sheep and a very aggressive goat, I would think. Unless it is indeed a TOAD of a bobcat! :)

Lynx or big Bobcat. Only a guess. No big canine tail, short neck and the eyes seem close together. The curved backend is also cat-like.

Pause at 1:14 of this video and compare to the picture taken. Also consider that the shoulder area is wider than shown in the pic. I'd say you have a healthy Bobcat that has found an easy source of food!

Feed him a lead/dirt sammy!

Jack Russell
11-04-2012, 01:03 PM
Reddish color would indicate more bobcat than lynx? Have seen some local bobcats that are bigger than what I had thought they grow to. An earlier comment about a 46 lb bobcat makes it possible. Didn't realize they were that aggressive to kill a farm animal, although a lamb wouldn't be a stretch.

The cats have such a mystique about them, very intriguing.

I personally think it to be a Bobber.
I'm not seeing the structure of a Lynx's hind end.

Definately not a puppy of any kind......

Can I get the original file from off the camera (full resolution), emailed to me?

Big Lew

Judging from it's posture, as well as having large hindquarters and smallish front end, as well as it's body being relatively short-coupled, I would say a large bob cat. Lynx usually show up lighter in colour in a night photo.

There is no real tail, just a stub. Unless it was a dog with a docked tail, it's not a canine. The animal was observed walking before the pic was taken. Ample time to see if it had a tail.

Another possibility is this thing didn't kill the farm animals, but is present from the ruckus or smell. Cats all go for the same things first, organs. It would be pretty obvious it was a cat because they have to latch on with claws (punctures and/or rake marks) to get a good enough hold to crush the top of the skull, spine or windpipe. Most dogs would nip and bite at the haunches before figuring out how to kill let alone be that efficient?

The first thing I looked for was bite marks on the rear ends, hamstrings, rear of abdomen. Thats how I have always seen wolves and yotes attack deer ad livestock, and there are always yotes around there. But there were no marks there, just around the throat. Then the front of the abdomen was ripped open on one side and some guts and meat eaten. The possibility of rogue dogs certainly occurred to me, especially as very little was eaten from the carcasses initially. But the witnesses said it was not dog like, didn't move like a dog, and had a stubby tail.
