Just seems I have a knack at finding these little buggers. A tasty way to fill up the freezer. Solo backpacked him out. Even with these young bulls, it is a lot of work.

Well done dana, good eating there. It looks like you were packing a bit of the hide out? (flytying). How far did you have to pack him out? Saw an immy this year but not during the open season, now just waiting for some of your usual big buck pics. all the best

Yup, that is a Mystery Ranch pack.

Tried to do it in 4 trips. Last trip I had to take some meat out about the 1/2 way mark. Was going to rip something, and not on the pack. So 4 1/2 trips. Would have been more if it wasn't a young bull.

very cool antlers.

i thought this was going to be the bull that a guy shot yesterday.
i was about to stop the quad and go glass a cut i coouyld see through the trees.
just as i was slowing the quad down, a shot went off ahead of me.
i rounded the bend to see a quad sitting on the trail and a guy walking back to it.
he had just shot a moose that was standing out in the cut.
he described it as having one side with two long tines that swept out.
i was picturing that he was describing the tines coming off the palm, but now i see.

this is why some extra time glassing can pay off.
at first glance, one would see the big side and assume it's not a shooter.
great moose, dana.
looks like a lotta work too.

I like to bring home hide and legs for the dogs. If this had of been a bigger bull, I would have skinned and deboned on site.

What a weird looking little guy! Wonder what happened to him? Congrats, should be a tasty little guy. Great example of the ever controversial "is it a legal spike fork moose" question. :)

Any closer pics of the weird antler?

Sweet find and eats there, congrats. Guess for sure you won't be shooting a buck unless its a good one.
! I always save leg bones and chop them into soup bones for the dogs too but what do the dogs do with the hyde ?

Either smart meters are to blame, or he used his cell phone only on the right side.:-D

Congrats Dana, looks like you worked for it.

Congrats man, takes an experienced hunter to properly identify that as a legal bull in a short period of time. You continue to impress......awesome job!

A lot to be said for solo hunts and packs.
They are that much more satisfying.....to me anyways.
Again, congrats.

Thought I would throw in that I don`t think most realize on here just how tough Dana is except for those who have met him would know......throwing a moose quarter on his back like that even if it was a young bull, is a hefty load.

Hey thats awesome Dana, nothing beats moose meat to fill the freezer, expecially those nice young ones. Hope the pack wasn't terribly far, we drug ours down the mountain whole and my back was wrecked for a over a week afterwards.

The fork side was definately a messed up pedicle. It came off the head way wrong. I wonder what he would have looked like with a few more years of growth.

I was happy I was able to call this little guy in. I can definately say "calling works" on young bulls too. I cow called for about an hour and never heard a peep from him. He came in silently, but he came in.

The dogs chew on them. There is a theory that wild dogs and wild cats will eat hair off the hide a few times a year to flush their systems of worms and such. I can tell ya I've never had a worm problem with my dogs even though I feed a mix of raw and dry.

Nice Job Steve, nice when you can find a late season moose, especially with no snow.
