It was a good start to the season. We trailed in 12 horses for 2 days into main camp & only got one horse stuck in the mud. http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee231/lynx2lynx/guide2012045.jpg
There was a father & son who wanted to get a sheep each. The hunters flew in & the next morning we saddled up & packed all the horses. It was about a 7 hr ride up to spike camp. We unpacked the horses, hobbled them & turned them loose to feed for the night. We got our camp set up and had a good feed for ourselves. http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee231/lynx2lynx/guide2012076.jpg
The next morning we were up & at em at sunrise. We had previously scouted this beautiful high mountain valley to find the rams. We rode the horses about 1/2 way up the mountain and climbed over the top from there. We were slowly & carefully looking down a steep mountain shute when we spotted the rams bedded down @ 422yds. The father was to try & get the 1st ram so got in position to shoot. He got the go ahead to try & take the ram. Straight down hill, 422 yds & a borrowed rifle = ram 1 hunter 0, missed ram on the 1st day.

looking down at the rams..http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee231/lynx2lynx/guide2012pat007.jpg
the first day we got back to camp around 11:00 P:M needless to say we were pretty fricken tired.
Day two we found the rams on a different mountain. They had joined up with another band of rams. It was about a three hour ride to get to the bottom of the mountain they were on. We tied up the horses & started our climb.http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee231/lynx2lynx/guide2012082.jpg
The wind was in our face & the sheep couldn't see us. We side hilled for a couple hundred yards to a small rock pile where we could see the rams. There were only 6 that we could see, but the biggest one was out of sight so we had to wait until the closer rams fed out of site. When they did we did the hundred yard dash to another rock pile. We were now within 440 yds. The big ram fed into site. The father was still going to take the first shot. The first shot was way off target. The son then started to shoot also. I was calling the shots, 2 feet high, 1 ft high & then a hit the ram slowed down. Finally after 8 shots and out at 600+ yards the ram was down. The father hit the ram in the foot on his third shot & the son anchored the ram with a lucky shot thru the heart....http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee231/lynx2lynx/firstram.jpg

Hunt #2. My wife joined us for the rest of the season.http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee231/lynx2lynx/guide2012pat044.jpg
Hunted out of the same camp but a 6hr ride up another valley to set up spike camp. It would of been at least an hour shorter if the hunter didn't go for a swim on the way.http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee231/lynx2lynx/guide2012pat056.jpg
We set up camp & went scouting for the afternoon. It stays light until at least 11:30 P:M. There were no rams found that day. The next day was a long rough ride thru thick alders & a few dangerous wash outs. Guess I'll be fixin that trail next July. We were able to find a lone ram about a mile from where we rode to, unfortunately it started to rain & the fog rolled in. We only got a short glimpse of him & he was gone. After an all day hike we started back to the horses & the fog lifted just as the ram came around a mountain ridge. He was only a 3/4 curl & to young to go after, so back to camp via the HE!! trail. My wife had spotted a nice ram from camp. Unfortunately he had only on horn.http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee231/lynx2lynx/guide2012pat076.jpg
The next morning we were going back up that HE!! trail. It was so thick that the hunter was 25-30yds behind me. I heard he swearing about something but I kept going until I got to a clear spot to glass for sheep. When he got there I asked him what he was swearing about. He then told me about the two sweeping branches that knocked him off his horse, backwards heels over head (ouch).
We were riding up a creek bottom & coming around a corner when I saw two rams about 400yrds up the mountain.
Both of them were just under full curl & to young. They saw us & headed out.http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee231/lynx2lynx/guide2012pat083.jpg
We watched which way they went & saw more rams at the top of the mountain. We had to get off the horses & start to climb to get between the young rams & the other rams so they didn't spook the ones on top of the mountain.
It took us about three hours to get within shooting distance of the other rams. We belly crawled to a couple of rocks so the hunter could get a good rest. He was shooting a 300win mag. with 180 tsx bullets. The biggest ram was laying down & all we could see was his head & horns. No shot at 400 yds, so we had to wait for him to get up & move. It was about 20 min. & he finally stood up. I told the hunter to take the shot. Unfortunately he wasn't paying
attention & he wasn't ready the ram did a 180 & layed back down with his vitals showing. The hunter finished putting on more clothes & was able to get a shot at the ram. Thats all it took, his dream ram was down & he was one happy camper.

For you mpotzold:
To hard to get rifles here from Mexico I guess. The father & his rifle got rolled over by a horse when we were going after the rams. Couldn't chance sighting in while stalking 14 rams. The son had a back up if needed, which was a good thing.
