I'm heading to Clearwater for a few days with a bunch of buds who have drawn bull moose in the area. I don't have a draw, but I have a quad and I've been working out so they asked me to join them, lol.

Since I am on holidays in between jobs (took a transfer that will allow me much more time for hunting, fishing, living, etc...), I figured what the heck!

I'll be looking for Dana, and try to follow him to the big mulie killing grounds...

Not moving to another town, just transferring from my damn desk job to a regular shift! 4 on, 4 off, hunt fish, hike, ski, etc... Much better then getting secretary spread sitting on my butt in an office!

The GWN move will be in a year or two, or three, lol

Now, the hard choice. 300wsm or 375 Ruger???

blackbart

Better go big to kill anything in Clearwater, the 375 Ruger may be just marginally big enough for the deer you will be hunting since you don't have a moose tag. They are some tough critters around those parts.

You might want to drive over your gun, leave your gun at home, burn down your tent, pray for snow and borrow a buddies rifle - sometimes it just works better that way.

I would roll with the 375 ruger. Good luck on your hunt!

I'm taking the WSM this time, after today's range session and two touching and the third less than a bullet's width away at 220 meters, I like that accuracy! Plus it's time I bloody this rifle...

It always works better when things go sideways, and it makes for a much much better story when it does finally come together. :)

Greg / Steve - I negleted to add a couple of details regarding hunting in Clearwater such as:

- know your prey and its habitat
- don't poke a bear in the arse
- be persistant as heck
- never give up, even after all of the events in my first post took place (real or make believe)
- bring a really big hat to fit over the really big head you will get after the experience

Looking forward to reports of your November / December escipades this year.

Now that I'm settled in Region 3 I feel the need for a short drive north . . . cougar is top on the list but I don't think I can pass on the 200" buck if he presents itself!

Makes a guy wonder why he has refused to say what unit even though he has singled out Clearwater. I betcha they are hunting no where even close to Clearwater. ;)

Working on the moose draw in 3:40 in the morning and pursueing deer in the afternoon. Saw one small bull pulled out of the valley this morning. Have yet to see a deer in the back country, the only one ive seen so far is a doe on a field by the highway being chased by three yotes, seen very little sign as well but we dont know the area so hopefully well start seeing more as we explore more country. Lots of wolf sign around although they seem to be riding solo.

Saw Two does today, keep going higher and as we do it seems all that increases is the number of wolf tracks. No moose seen and we are looking behind every tree but have yet to find the one hiding the monster buck. Hopefully the snow forecasted for tonight will push them around

Don't shoot them all, leave one for me, as I'm hoping to come up there this coming weekend for a few days.

Go elsewhere if u don't know the area or at least avoid 3.40 LOL, haven't seen anything again today and only two does all trip. Probably because we don't know the area and are just cruising but we've tried a different area every day ant hunted them hard but have yet to find enough sign to warrant a return trip. Well take a look at a new area tomorrow, don't know where yet though

Must be a genetic thing for the area. ;)

The moose have probably wised up to people cruising the roads by now, and are hiding in the timbers.

Yup but that's hunting for u. Keep plugging away and u never know what you'll run into. Just hoping to be at the right place at the right time. Heading up the raft tomorrow to explore around there. Try to get as high as possible and into the fresh snow. If there is anything moving we hope to see it or its tracks to maybe get an idea of where to go later this week. And it looks like u can get close to the river bottomland to see if the moose are down there

In Nov you typically need to be pushin' snow with the bumper to find moose in the Raft Valley. With the lack of new logging in there the last ten years, you will need to push a ton of alder as well. ;)

We will just head there for the morning and based on what we see maybe go back to the drawing board for the evening. We got a week left, just looking for the best place to stick around for the last couple days, might even give up on the moose draw and head towards kamloops to a more familiar area for deer.

Anyone got any suggestion?high, low, left, right.
