So this weekend my buddy and I dumped two white tail doe at 250 yards. Was pretty apparent to us they were both doe. Upon reaching our kill, we found that his doe, actually had a three inch spike on one side. No meat and potatoes, all girl there. First time I've seen it, although I think I have read about it before on here. She was also significantly larger than the other doe in the group. Once I clear it with my partner I will throw up a pic. Might be the odd buck keeping that one under the table from his buddies.

Happens a lot, and I've found they usually keep the velvet on longer than the bucks do.

I don't see why it wouldn't be. The tag says antlered or antlerless, not male or female.

I shot one in region 8 about 20 years ago also . Same as yours ,just 1 antler and about 2-3 inches

So from 250 yards you could tell that the spike had no nuts and took it as a doe?

Wondering the same thing. Spikes come smaller than 3 inches so you gotta be pretty sure of what your taking. At least you can get another doe.

If they're both open, who cares?

I guess as long as the tags would be filled out correct it doesn't matter at all. I would think most guy wouldn't want to waste a buck tag on a 3" spiker that they thought was antlerless tho.

Saw a 2 point muley in full velvet in late november last year.....figured it was a doe, but will never know??

To clarify, we were willing to take any white tail that presented itself and thought we were shooting doe. Didn't see the spike until we walked up. Cut the tag as antlered but weren't positive that was the right call. Made a note in the comments on the tag and away we went. Not a big white tail hunter so I couldn't care less about a 3 inch spike or a slick top. Took a 3 x 3 mule the next day so that's it for me in Region 8. Just happy to have meat in the freezer and and an interesting story to go with. This spike was also in velvet. Seems consistent with other guys experiences. Thanks for the info.

A neat deer to get. Congrats on your boe or what ever it should be called.

A 'Boe", or a "Duck" ???

Good on ya for slamming some WTs. Never thought I'd view them as slightly undesirable until I started hunting Mulw Deer.
