Just found out my 2 yr old lab Jesse may have cancer. Will know more in the next few days. Anyone go through this with a young dog?? Christ I just buried Abby two yrs ago. (she was also 2 yrs old.)

As a veterinarian most dogs with lymphoma I see are a bit older then Jesse, but it is possible at this age. Same in people; leukemia and lymphoma affect the young as well as the old. I am sure your veterinarian will have submitted samples to the lab to confirm the diagnosis and you will have to wait until they are in. If it confirms the diagnosis the only treatment option is chemotherapy. The good news is that dogs generally tolerate it very well, the bad that it does not cure the disease; it just slows it down. Without treatment average survival is 2 months, with treatment +/- 14 months.

Good information on lymphoma can be found here:

I hope it turns out to be a false alarm...

What clinical signs / observations noted, prompted the investigation?

Noticed her neck glands were enlarged and semi-hard. I only noticed two, but when at the vets She noticed all 4 in upper/lower neck plus in her armpit area

Also she is showing no signs of being sick right now.

Just to mention the other side - my dog had swollen glands also a while back and I was very worried. It turned out not to be lymphoma.

I hope the diagnosis results bring good news.

My wirehair was 3 when we noticed a lump alongside its groin, tested positive for Lymphoma ...it was hard to believe, he had lots of energy and was a happy dog. A couple months later we noticed an enlarged lymph node in his neck, had it surgically removed which almost killed him (will never do that again). Had the choice of chemotheropy but it was too expensive an option for an additional 10-12 months of prolonged sufferring, opted for Prednisone (steroid) which gave him 3 more months of pain free life. Then one day he started slipping on one leg ...3 days later his hind quarters were not functioning at all and I had to make the trip to the vet.

Hopefully your dog is lymphoma free, they can have swollen glands for other reasons as Sasquatch mentioned.

Thanks for the kind words, shes laying at my feet right now, she has noisy breathing but it seems to be positional, My kids (daughter 9 and son 6) know what is going on. We are going to get family pictures done with her before we put her down.

Sorry to hear about this Rob.
I'm sitting here looking at our 10 year old Toller knowing that her clock is ticking, don't know how I'll deal with it at the time.
I go in for my own tests next week, Lymphoma is a possibility according to my Dr. Hope they can do more for humans than for dogs.

Well I'm sorry to read this, two dogs at two that is just hard on the heart. Sorry for your loss, sounds like your partner had a good one though as far as care and making the call when the time came to do what is so hard, more importantly do what is unselfish. We've all been there and will be again because the highs of dog ownership out weigh the lows, just have to remember that when you're at rock bottom.

Condolences man....

We're in the process of finding our lab a new home and it's killing me to think of him sleeping at someone else's feet. How do these pooches work their way into our heart without us noticing it.....

Anyway, hope your kids don't take it too hard....
