In that they would be hanging around cow/calfs? The reason I ask is because when we were scouting a few weeks back in 5-1, and our tags were not yet valid, we saw 3 bulls in one day. This last weekend when actually able to put some down we saw cow/calfs on 2 different occasions and no bulls. Would bulls be hanging around the cow/calfs in the way that bucks hang out with does?

a few weeks ago the rut was in full swing, now its post rut and the big boys will be hunkered down in the thick stuff conserving energy, you may find some smaller bulls still hanging out with the odd cow/calf combo though.

aha, so the bulls are in hiding and are not hanging around the cows any more. Thanks, bowhunterbruce.

saw a huge bull in that area last week, he took off but come running back out at us after one cow call...so they might still be interested...

some cows don't get bred the first time around so if u find a couple cows there is probably a bull within ear shot somewhere nearby. They definetly won't be rut crazy anymore but they will still lazily come in to investigate. i've heard that the big bulls will often find a secluded patch of good feed and hang out there with very little travelling while they replenesh their food stores. so if u see one one day and don't bump him he'll likely be there the second day.

You read half of what he said and missed the part about smaller bulls still hanging with some of the cow/calf combos. This time of year look for tracks. Moose are often much easier to catch up to than deer.

your asuming that those who are looking at tracks accually know the difference between bull and cow tracks, too some people there is no differance. lol

Just saw a 45" bull with 4 cows on the weekend, if you are seeing cows look back in the bushes, rut may be winding down but their still cuddling

a set of bull moose tracks tend to be rounded at the tips and will spread apart forming a "v" shape and more offten will show thier dew claws with thier hoofs in the print, this is mainly due to the heavier weight that thet bare on each leg compared to a cows print which tends to be pointier at the tips and will look more rounded. although cows also have dews, its less likely your going to see them when imprinted on the same type of ground where you can just slightly see them from a bull.

Depending on the bull/cow ratio in the area, there could still be horny cows waiting for service.
Then also the second estrus may be kicking in for those early cyclers.
Like said, not as hot as the primary rut, but the beat still goes on.
good luck
