On monday I took my buddy out. He has only hunted twice before, once with me last season, and once with me the year before that. He is a great family man and 95% of his schedule revolves around family. So for him to get out and hunt is a pretty big deal. However, he does view it as a way to get his family some meat. Funny, he was lamenting about ALL the time he has spent hunting and hasn't yet got an animal. If only he knew how much time I put in each year hunting.

We left before first light and got up to a favorite area of mine. Despite our efforts we only say 1 doe. So we headed back to my place for lunch and then headed up our own back 40. We pounded some bush, nothing. I decided we should head to the top, sit in a cut and wait till it got dark. On our way up, my son waved us down to tell us he just saw a spike fork up a side trail. I asked my friend if he wanted to go for it. He did, so we turned around.

We hiked up the trail to where my son saw the deer but nothing was around. I figured we should hike back down and circle around lower as I figured he was heading down to feed. On the way back down the same trail we just hiked up I spot a 3x3 beded down about 20 yards to our left. The way the deer was positioned he didn't offer up any good shot placement. Since we were quite close I asked my friend if he was comfortable going for a neck shot. He said yes and fired. The deer rolled down the hill and came to rest, "it's all over I thought". And then the deer got to his feet and looked totaly fine. He walked down the hill a little ways. Now I could tell he was dazed. The deer was now broadside and my friend shot again but missed. The deer walked down further and stopped right on the trail we were standing on, he circled, took a few steps towards us and then stopped to look uphill. A 3rd shot put him down for good.

I was soo happy I could help my buddy get his first deer. He didn't seem very excited but he commented at least that he thought it was a decent size. My friend has spent lots of time in Africa and has seen the small antelope there, so I can see why he thought this deer was semi-large.

All in all, it was a good day.
