Finally got my first whitie. I haven't really hunted them much but when the doe season came up I thought I would give it a whirl.

I was putting down a road when I came across a Ford Ranger stopped in the middle of the road. I asked the guy what was going on and he said a doe and a spike whitie crossed the road and his buddy was after them. I wished him good luck and turned around. I decided to go up a smaller adjacent road that paralleled the road where they crossed. I got no further than 60yards up the little road when I saw the little buck standing in a boggy patch about 45yds from me.

I slipped off the bike and quietly loaded the trusty ole 308. He didn't move a mussel, he was facing away from me and only presented a head shot as a Texas lung shot was out of the question.

What seemed like an eternity waiting for him turn and give me a bigger target I decided to do the head shot. Bang went the 308, I missed and he didn't even blink. Bang again wtf I missed and he didn't bolt cause he must have thought he was pretty safe with this dummy by now. I was bang on at 25yds at the range and thought I must me shooting over him and was waaaay too excited. So ok focus and squeeze and aim a little lower. Finally he went down.

This is no monster by any means but I was doing cartwheels (almost literally) Why he didn't bolt as soon as he even saw me was very strange and I feel very lucky. Thank you hunting gods.

Sure fun on a 3wt. I use a ST Croix Legend. It takes a bit longer to get them in.The biggest bow i caught with it was 24" The biggest cutty was 27" Lots of fun. Your going to love that white tail, Save some hair for tying flies.

That's some whoppers ruger1. The amount of rods Iv'e gone trough over the years I would never consider a ST Croix or Sage. I breakem to much. haha 27 inch cutty. Thats huge. Searun I bet.

maybe its just me , misunderstanding your post. But from the sounds of it, you shot a buck that you knew another hunter was actively pursuing? doesn't sound very sporting to me.

No stumpy, wrong number. I did see his partner down the road glassing on the east side of the road the way they migrate that time of day. I didn't want to follow them on the road and didn't want to pass them either. I was near the start of the adjacent road to the west. Also the two roads are separated by a fairly high ridge. I was nowhere near them.

Congratulations on your first WT buck! Great looking rainbows too. Well done!

Gotta admit, I had the same reaction as Bearstump when I first read your story. Clarification is good.
