Hey all, thought I would post of a rookie hunter's trip to the regions around Kamloops.

Basically, we got there on the first, late in the evening, and did a quick scout via truck. The next day we hit the roads, and put some mud on the truck, as well as a few km here and there in the bush (nothing seen or heard). Returning to "base camp" around lunch, I noticed a doe on top of a ridge. Got out of the truck, grabbed the bino's, and counted 5 does... no wait, 4 does and a deer with gear! Pulled out my Sako A7 300wm (Magnum, which is why the deer died), and fired 90 yards up a steep hill. The shot entered around the middle of his right side, and as he was quartering away, exited just behind his left shoulder, clipping the stomach and lungs. The buck took off and disappeared from view, then came sprinting back opposite the way he left and folded up in mid air. Buck down!

The guy I was with, had never been hunting prior to this day, and had recently acquired his core and a Marlin 1895. He happily watched as I did the dirty...

The next day, we decided to return home 2 days earlier than planned.. and after a quick morning hunt, packed up around 1 pm, and left. Four miles down the road, we found a 2 pt standing on the road around 30 yards away, staring at us. Out of the truck, up with his gun, and buck fever kicked in something fierce. 4 semi automatic rounds later, and the buck was gone from view. Ventured into the woods, and found him under a tree. Haul him to the road, lmao as my buddy gets bloody, and unload and reload the truck. Home we go, what a trip.

To top things off, I clobbered a grouse on the way out with my 12g!!! Booyah!

Anyway, road hunting rocks, and magnums rule. Nuff said ;)

Ps. That picture has been sent into the Browning Show us your Buckmark contest, if you can take a minute and locate it, gimme your best vote, I would appreciate it!!!

I dont know a lot about rifles but I'm curious as to why a Magnum was the reason this deer died? A deer at 90 yards partly through the lungs sounds like a shot that a lot of rifles could have killed.

It's a well known fact that magnums kill deer deader than non-magnums.

Good job. Very good staRt in your hunting career. The thing you got to stop now though is, this leaving two days earlier than planned stuff. I have been at this for a lot of years. I went with guys who were so whipped that one day out of town, they were looking for a pay phone to check on the old lady. Stick it out and that's when the big ones will cross your path. Eventually you will want try moose, patience will bring dividends then. Attaboy.
