I so needed this, my kids both having deer this season Dad was feeling the pressure LOL Started out early with Buckwheat and Chappy for a day trip into the area of 8-05 we like so much. Within minutes of daylight and the first road we we're on we saw a cow moose and minutes later 4 mulie does. We thought we we're in for a fun day!! The rest of the day we didn't even see a chipmunk. Was a frustratingly long day checking lots of area thick and thin and not seeing a thing. The rain at times was rude, but the wind all day long we think was our enemy. Then in a last ditch effort we took a run up a road we've only used a few time. Then as we're heading in Shane yells buck. Damn that kid has one keen set of deer finding eyes. I get out of the truck, run back down the road some 25 yds and still cant see the damn deer. After one more glare and a pointed finger from Shane the deer becomes obvious. 75yds down in a small gulley the deer never moved. Till I hit him in the throat that is. It just goes to show, never give up till you can't see to shoot. With grateful help from Shane and Ian we had the buck cleaned and trimmed for the ride home in no time flat.

Fantastic end to an otherwise frustrating day.

Apologies for the pictures, some dummy (me) forgot my camera. Good thing I took my blackberry!!!

I'm in the same boat as you were...I have never shot a white tail buck. Lots around these days...I hope to end my streak this year also.
Congrats on a nice buck and some fine venison to come. Let us know how it tastes. I have been told that the meat is better tan mulie ...from my limited experience they are more less the same...Yummy :)

Way to go David! It is about time Shane started to earn his keep. Nice, tall set of antlers. In my experience I have found that whitetail is milder than mulie. I am getting really anxious to get out and put something on the ground as well. The wife has got to stop finding things around the house for me to do.

Thanks gang. Was a relief to come home with something after such a day that we had. I found him really soft and super easy to skin, much easier than any mulie I've ever done. Is that typical for a WT? And boy was this guy packing fat. Thought we were dealing with a fall bear.

FAT everywhere. My WT was the same. Loaded with it. Makes for some tasty cuts. The few steaks I have shared with my friends were just delicious. People are loving the WT. Nice going.

I have never eaten a whitetail before, is the fat more like moose or beef? I know some fat on a nice moose or beef steak adds to the flavor but any fat left on a mulie or blacktail will absolutely ruin it IMO. Is a Whitey different?

Reminds me of my first, a perfect 5 by 5...

A buddy of mine was pissd at me, said that I have to work my way up to a great buck like that, should spend 20 years shooting spikes and forks before I deserved something like that... Sucks to be him I guess...

Congrats.. You WILL taste the difference between whitey and muley...and.. I have not bought a muley tag in 5 years:wink:

Many days left yet my good man. I really wanted a bear, but I suppose I'll have to make do with this ugly creature!!!!
