Hey HBC,

well guys got my biggest deer to date and first of the season, i thought i would head up to one of my spots i spend a lot of time in and do the loop i always do, so i was first into the road that i always start on to start my loop but i didnt see one animal in there, so i figured i would head up a little higher to see what was crawling around, so i continued on my loop about about 30min after i left my first road i came into a clearing and spotted movement a long ways out there so i grabbed the binos to see what it was, and it was 2 deer at first both bucks big 2 point and a 3 point, so i jumped outta the truck found the closest rock to rest on and i lined up with my tikka t3 light 300. Win Mag and was going to take the shot when the 3rd one appeard, and when i seen him he was the one i was going to be shootin at no questions asked, i didnt feel i had much time to range them with the range finder so i left the turret dial on 200yards and i lined up and BOOM took the first shot and all 3 bucks just stood there lookin at me, then they started to walk across the clearing slowly so i lined up again but a bit higher this time and BANG let round number 2 go as they were slowly walking, after the 2nd shot they stopped and stared at me again, so as they were standing still i lined up for a 3rd shot but a little higher again almost to the top of his throught but was aiming at his lungs and let numer 3 go BANG, and cuz i dont blink when i shoot my 300 Win Mag i was able to see that only 2 had run away, so i reloaded and headed out to see if the 3rd one was layin dead and when i got out there, there he was dropped on the spot so when i got to him i ranged my truck with the range finder and from where he laid to my truck was 274 yards, i was pretty darn excited as last wee i missed a giant muley, this one wasnt as big as the one i missed a week ago but he will still do that for sure,

with internals and head and hide off, so just bones and meat he weighed 145 pounds,

my real camers had was dead so the only pics i could get of him was when i got him to the road where my phone was cuz my phone was in my truck,,,,here are some pics of him enjoy.......

I don't say this to be offensive but the shots shoulda been ~ 3 inches low. So if center of vitals were targeted, he still shoulda been fatally hit.
If it happened to me, it would be driving me nuts as to the cause of it, and is why I bring it up here.

If the shooting rest was sound, me thinks something else is up.
Especially after compensating on the 2nd crack at him.

Cheers!

yes I agree thats why I asked the questions, and zeroed at 200 yards no need to compensate, point and shoot at the distance you ranged him....274yds ???

My thoughts exactly a 300 win mag shouldnt vary that much in 70 yds, Like Mr. Dean I am not saying this to be critical but to hopefully be helpfull 2 misses from a rest coupled with the mention of a previous miss would have me looking for answers. A bit of time experimenting may correct an overlooked problem. Glad it worked out in the end for you. Congreats on a nice buck lotsa good eats there for sure

Congrats Buck fever will do it >i missed the first shot this year on my 4 point as I was waiting for it to get lite enough and when it was I counted 4 points and saw a pretty decent sized rack my heart rate went up.Yes I missed too but settled down for shot #2 and made it count.I don't care how many deer i've shot when a decent one comes into the x hairs my heart rate AKA buck fever sets in.Glad you got him thats why our mags carry more than one shot!!
