I think they might be alien or dinosaur tracks? Or possibly turkey?

I was hiking into a vehicle restricted area in the West Kootenays on Tuesday and saw these crossing over my tracks in on the way back out, so it was there sometime between 0530 and 1100.

Size 9.5 boots, for reference. Yeah they seemed big to me but I haven't looked at a lot of tracks before so I wasn't sure.

Most likely turkey, the only other bird large enough would be a crane but a crane's foot is much more slender. Part of our holiday involved driving on quite a few roads throughout the Kootenays and we saw several turkeys along the side of roads. It seems their population is rapidly increasing.

definitely a turkey.
an ostrich and emu have waaaay larger feet than that.

only other explanation would be an alien, right?

Sandhill Crane. They are migrating now and they love, you got it, sandy areas.

I don't talk turkey... But from being around domestic turkeys, I don't believe the talon off the back of a turkey's foot leaves that much of an imprint.

Neat, I had never even heard of the sandhill crane. Always associated cranes with water. So what would distinguish the crane track from turkey? Size and gait? There are definitely turkeys in the region, I saw a flock several years ago maybe 20-30 km from this location.

You might be right, I did see what looked like coyote tracks through there too. Close call .

Sandhill Crane would be my guess too, although where you see one you usually see numerous. They are all over the place at the main Suncor site in Fort Mac during the summer.
