He wasnt too bad actually , lost a horn but we found it. Crazy how the hide separates from the quarters from the impact , like wearing your hide like a pillowcase:shock:
Meat was fine as it was VERY dead at the starty of his dive....then again might have to stop by 'Reliable' and ask Shane how the goat steaks are:-P..not a fan myself , but have had it jarred and it was good.

Never could understand why people shoot sheep/goats when their in bad spots, then watch them free fall and cartwheel down the mountain.

Cause it looks cool?

In reality, most goats are in areas where they will tumble. IF you only shot goats that arent gonna do a bit of a tumble, well i assume you will be doing a lot of hking and goat viewing.

Free falling and cartwheeling is what you want....%100 better than hanging them up on a shelf you cant get to . He was in a 'bad spot' 1 hr earlier.;)

I Agree ! seems pretty rude to the animal - no respect - JMHO RJ

I watched my first goat take a tumble. Cant say I want to see it again. But it does happen. As long as the animal is recovered and meat is carried out its all good!

pretty rude..no respect huh? you still put fing lead into it and take its life no matter if it tumbles off a bluff or drops in its tracks ..if it was all about respect i wouldnt hunt and kill animals ..jmho

proguide66
10-08-2012, 08:46 PM
'Respect' for the animal was the perfect shot wich made it dead before the fall.....respect 'part 2' was safely retrieving %100 of the animal. Take note the hand held cam was a Sony Handycam wich makes everything look much much farther than it actually is.
Must admit , I'm kinda SURPRISED theres actually 'hunters' on here that think cleanly shot 'mountain game' 'tumbling' after being cleanly killed is 'dissrespectfull'.......whats next , moose being shot in a pond too dissrespectfull cause they might die a drowning death after the shot?
JMHO,:-P

i think people just think that the meat is not going to be ok enuf to eat after its beat up falling down a mountain- sometimes education is the key!

you might be right. Let it be known that it is physically impossible for the meat to bruise once the heart stops beating...IMPOSSIBLE.The goat was fine , all came home.

People are dumb.

Thats mostly the problem!

I hope to send a goat to a triple sow cow off a cliff starting next friday!

My comment has nothing to do with meat being ruined. 95+ % of people who shoot goats are truly interested in the mount not the meat( yes I realize they pack the meat out ) so if your main goal is to have the animal mounted, why risk ruining the cape and horns?

Can we-right now on HBC- set the allowable distance an animal may tumble and still be respectful to the animal? When does it stop being a respectful animal falling down a hill and when does it start being rude and disrespectful?

I think we need a specified distance, so I'll know when to call the ethics police and when to just congratulate the hunter on a good shot that kills the animal cleanly.

Nice Billy PG!! After reading this thread I think I'll be waiting for the ducks to land before I whack em, wouldn't want any of them bouncing off the ground too hard ;)

Nice hunt! Goats tumble after they get shot, that's just the way it is. My big billy actually pushed himself off a cliff with it's last dying breath... If you are lucky, it only goes a little way, if you are unlucky, you have one heck of a hard recovery! Goats live in steep terrain, much steeper than what most sheep live in.

Thanks for the vid PG! Yup, true fact, goats fall hard!
Me personaly have passed on many goats just cause of where they were standing/bedded at the time, (hate the thought of breaking a horn off and not finding it, or getting hung up! (even worse), but thats just me.

Any after the shot photos??

Every goat i've guided or been in on, has done the death plunge. Fact is a good taxi will make even the worst meat puppet look damn near perfect after he or she is done with it. Losing a horn can be an issue but if you watch the fall carefully, you can almost always recover the broken horn or horns.
Nice work Steve !

I never said it's unethical, rude or disrespectful. I just dont think it's worth risking losing/smashing horns or ruining the cape. I have been in on goat kills where the animal rolled through some bad spots.

Percentage of slope incline multiplied by the vertical height in metres squared. The resulting number must not be over 2663 before Oct. 15 After that the number increases with centimetres of snow fall recieved after that date. Excluding Rememberance day long weekend.

There was a study done on horn breakage from the fall, and most goats don't even break off half an inch. As far as the meat not being very good, I would have to say its one of the only animal with marbled fat in the meat. Anyone ever seen a goat run much? Sure an old billy would be tough, but they are good. I wouldn't hesitate to roll a meat goat down the mountain 600 yards if it meant not packing it down! I don't see anything bad about it. Sure, I would try to shoot em if possible on a flat easy to get to spot, but lets be honest. They are MOUNTAIN goats.

Great video, I think I'll try to get my goats on video this next trip too! Cheers, Dave

Great vid PG, I have experienced the "mule on a goat hunt" before and my hat is off to you! Would love to see some of the "recovery" footage if there is any but expect you may have been concentrating on "recovery" rather than video recording...

For all the "respectful" hunters out there, in my limited experience I have only seen one goat that did not do a long drop and it was the hardest of all to retrieve (and nearly resulted in my own fall over a bluff that would have ensured my not being here today). So... IMHO that was a fine kill, hunter safety is the MOST important aspect of the hunt.

Glad 99% are liking it ! lol..I'm finding it quite fun to film as opposed to shooting or guideing.Might be my next chapter in my outdoor 'world'.
Funny , making vids has shown me how easy ti is to manipulate the viewers , its actually quite easy.I made a clear example of this with a past hog shoot in Alabama last winter.
Now if you ignore the dramatic music and 'really' watch , the goat actually free falls in the quick clip maybe 20 yards. As well , in no part of the video whatsoever does it show even a hint of just how high up the goat is or what he lands on.The music combo'd up with a quick 'oh my god' and a 'bounce' is sufficient to make the average viewer 'react'.
In reality , the goat suffered more damage during the gravel slide as opposed to the cliff drop , evidence of this was proven by finding the horn at the mid point of the gravel slide 'section' of his tumble. There was no 'blown up parts' or hemorraging from anything but the bullet wound.( where many times you see a blown up ram or goat during other mountain hunts.
If anything , watching the reactions of the individual viewers more shows the true 'attitude' of the individual viewer as opposed to what 'really goes on' on a video taped hunt scene.
There is much great footage to yet be released...its all comin soon! Lots of shared knowledge and lots of different hunters , going to be a cool 'ride' !!
I have footage of literally dozens of cool hunts with damned near every speices from alaska to southern Texas .Maybe I will whip together a quick video aimed at only getting a viewers reaction and we can have a laugh afterwords at the end result....not the video end result , the emotions of the viewers , will be funny !

Very well said. Will be great to watch the end result. People jump too quickly at what they think is someone elses "mistake" or "wrong doing." More people should try filming and see how much fun and challenging it is. I must say though I'd much have someone filming then trying to self film. Had a blast in the spring bowhunting and self filming bears. Looking forward to the "serious" BT season with the camera and bow.

I like every PG66 video a tonne. How about a combo DVD?? With music like that I'd be happy to pay to download it. Oh, wait a minute. They are already free on Youtube. :) Damn. Could have made for some extry income in the winter?!?!?
Come on Steve, show us a bit more of the Goat video. Put another nickel in it. I need five more seconds. Talk about a cliff hanger at the end of that one.

I know I'm not overly experienced compared to a lot of you guys, but I've been lucky to have been in on 5 successful goat hunts in the last 3 years. Of those 5 goat kills, only one fell more than 5 feet. Considering the odds, I bet my next goat's gonna need a parachute eh? :)

Great video Steve! Some wankers will always find a way to get their panties in a knot... The main thing is that the goat was recovered. I've heard of some that tumbled into the abyss.
