I'm leaving tomorrow for the long weekend. Hunting the area west of Clinton and south of the Big Bar road. We'll be walking in quite a way trying to get higher up. Looking for deer and scouting for an upcoming moose hunt.

Any input from guys who know this area?

i have hunted up there for 10 years moose and deer. moose are confined to spots, and the deer are really smart, you will hear bouncing and see bums! tough spot but some nice animals away from civilization thats for sure. i should find some old picts to post. we hunted on horses, deer arnt to bothered by them

Had a good time on this hunt. Cold at night, beautiful during the day. No success with bucks, but lots of sign, a few does, and a bull moose that we called in (no LEH so he lives to fight another day).

Here are some pics that I'd like input on:

What poop is this?

what poop is this?

No cows or wild/feral horses in evidence. Elevation was 4300' ASL to 5000' ASL.

What makes this tree scrape? Moose or deer?

and last, here's an iPhone through bino's pic of the moose we called in. After getting him in the area I used some sheds to walk up pretty close to him (50 yds?). I stuck the sheds out first, scraped a tree with them, and ended up standing across a beaver dam from him without him bolting. We ended up leaving him there in the dark.

Nice bull you called in, all the sign you're asking about is moose sign. Their scat is a little more clumpy when they eat aquatic plants.

Moose have taken a hit in there from wolves, but you can still find them. Forget road hunting and find some swamps to hike into. They will be in little pockets there.
