Hope he was packing a 3 day survival kit. I think everyone should carry one JIC. With a bit of luck he will stay put and be found soon. Wishing him good luck!

Got this from kelowna Fish and game club,

"Hello my friends,

It is with great sadness that I appeal to you. The "missing hunter" that you may or may not have heard about is our brother-in-law.

Search and Rescue announced today that they will allow civilians to participate in the search and rescue efforts.

We are asking anyone who is able to assist to come out, even for a few hours.

The search is being conducted from the Wilma lake area, it's about a 1/2hr drive from Winfield, a good portion of it is on a logging Rd. (make sure your vehicle is worthy)

The search is very well coordinated and teams are assembled, you will be given specific instructions.

The terrain is rough, and appropriate clothing: foot wear, layered warm clothing, and gloves are essential, no jeans please (as there are wet boggy areas), Wear bright colours or a safety vest if you have one, a walking stick is helpful.

Driving Directions (Wilma Lake) (as best I know them, tomorrow will be my first trip up there)

Heading into Winfield (from Kelowna) turn right onto Beaver lake Rd

Follow Beaver Lake Rd.

You will see a sign that says Beaver Lake Lodge, turn Left at that sign, Dee lake Rd (if you approach the lodge you have missed the turn)

Follow this road, Dee Lake Rd

Around mile marker 27, You will see signs of "Search in Progress" you may also see pink ribbon/markers

"camp" is up the hill,

Searching is conducted from 7am-5:30 pm

you will be required to sign in.

No need to let me know if you can come, just come.

If however you need to reach me:

My cell number is 250-863-2847

our home number is 250-764-1151"

Terrible news prayers go out to his family, friends and hunting partners.
Unfortunatly we always have to be reminded the hard way, be careful out there, if your leaving your truck, even for a quick walk, always take a pack with atleast basic survival gear. Tough day for the hunting community.

That's tough. Where's the link?
200 yards... Wow. S&R needs to tighten up the grids. Not a bash in any way but clearly more ground covered is definitely not more ground searched.

Since he was only 200 yds from his vehicle I'd go out on a limb and "guess" it was a medical condition....but we'll just have to wait and see.

Sad news indeed.

said on the radio he may have been injured and immobilized.

Condolences go out to the fam.

I'm sure S&R will start taking flack at some point, but I'm sure they followed their procedures and they are also volunteers. Having a spot tracker in your pack or on your belt can be a life saver.

Sympathy to the family. I will not point fingers at SAR, I was a team leader for close to 8 years on southern Van Isle. I cant comment on these circumstances, but it can be extremely difficult to locate someone that is completely immobilised or in this case deceased. Do the math, in this case 600 yards, draw a circle from last known position, that is an incredible amount of territory to search depending on terrain and ground cover. The search manager relies an awful lot on "gut feelings". I was involved in 2 searches that i recall, both were deceased and were not found for several days. all were close to there vehicles. Again my sympathy to the family.

Couldn't find another post on this so I thought I would pass it along...

Very sad story about a 52 year old BC man who was on a solo hunt and went missing 6 days ago. He was found after 5 days of searching not far from his truck with what appears to be a self inflicted gunshot wound. The report states it appears he was bushwacking with one in the chamber when his rifle discharged.

This topic has been discussed on this forum often but it never hurts to bring it up again.

Walking with one in the chamber is very dangerous, safety on or not. Solo or not.

My heart goes out to Mr. De Montezuma's family.

A sad day for all hunters.

Interesting as to his cause of death, I hadn't heard that part. It certainly is a terrible way to remind us of "what can wrong".

as sad as this is, it doesn't change the fact that it was due to carelessness.
this stuff happens every year it seems.
similar to that guy falling out of his boat and drowning at leighton.
these are accidents that should never have happened.
they were 100% preventable.

You are one callous person, you were not there at the time of any of these accidents, you don't know what was happening to either of these to people that had these accidents. Before you run off and says these accidents are due to carelessness please get the all the facts and think of the families that are on this site that might be reading your carelessness!
