What is the correct protocol for moving cattle off the road? I encountered a herd between me, the road, and the ledge below. I tooted the horn and assumed low range to follow them up slow to a place where they could pull over, but, they pretty much stampeded (best they were able), and somehow i know that's not supposed to be good for them. Ok I was a bit impatient too...

So, how do you gently move cows along, and then have them step aside when there is clearance??

A cow is nothing but a lot of trouble tied up in a leather bag!

Other than honking your horn it sounds like you were close to doing the right thing. Drive slow, stop only if you are going to touch one, if they have room to move out of the way they will. Calves will sometimes get a wild hair and try to outrun the vehicle. Follow them a bit at an slightly accelerated pace and then slow down to a crawl. They will start looking for Ma and turn back.

When moving cattle, slow is the fastest way.
