i talked to a guy who personally uses .223 so i dont see why not, my cousin uses .222 but alot of guys will say its not enough gun, slug is simply not packing enough kinetic energy to cause wound channel, i am simply recycling something i was told. How bout a .243?

Yes, but you need excellent shot placement and a premium bullet. A .223 is probably more practical, due to availability of a variety of ammunition, and cost of the ammunition.

I have two .222's, and use them for Coyotes and any Hoary Marmot that's dumb enough to steal gaskets out of the irrigation pipes. :D

Particularly if your son is a new(ish) shooter, he will need a solid calibre to ensure a quick death. If he was a proven sniper, maybe a .223 or .222, but still.........at the very light end for deer.
Start him off with a .243 if you have one....if not, a .270, 6.5x55, 7mm-08, .260 etc.
And use a good bullet like GH said.

What else do you have in the cabinet? Don't forget, you can also borrow a rifle to let your son try it out.

Good shot placement and a 222 is just fine, my wife, kid and my self have killed a few deer and a couple huge black bear with one. I would still look at a 243 as a better starter gun.

I just picked up a .222/20ga and checked on youtube indeed dudes are smacking deer with the caliber. not much out there for premium bullets. possible reloads would be a better choice.

Savage 24V? :D I have one of those. Pain in the ass to carry all day, but looks good in the cabinet. :D

Looking for a stock for it, without much luck, as well. :-(

use a quality bullet, which is not found in factory ammo. 45gr TSX is the only option for a handloader that will shoot in a 14 twist common in 222's

I'm gonna take a wild-assed-guess, and say that i don't think this guy's a reloader.
Call it a hunch. No offence, OP. :D
