So our elk season started with a long ride up into our area a couple of days before the season started. We got camp set up and the horses dealt with, then spent the next day and a half hiking hard and scouting for elk sign. Well it wasn't looking very good for us, we never heard anything talking, never seen any active wallows or rubs, and seen very little for tracks. Opening morning had us hiking into the head waters of a drainage that we wanted to hunt. Unfortunately it was much like the days we spent scouting before.......nothing. On our long walk back to camp we were already giving ourselves a time line on how long we would commit to hunting this area, as we only had 6 days to hunt on this trip.

Around 1/2 way back to camp, i told my partner i wanted to try a bugle at the base of a large slide chute. It worked, had a bull respond a long ways off up the slide. Within 5 minutes we had him really worked up and coming down hill using some cow calls. I got set up and waited for him to come out from the willows and cross a small creek cutting across the bottom of the slide. After another 15 minutes of him bugling and coming down he's now right on my front door step, but like so many other smart old bulls, he decides to hold-up and think about the situation a bit more before committing to step out. Upon hearing this, my partner begins thrashing around in the bush around 150 yards behind me making multiple cow calls, trying to sound like a herd of cows getting pushed away by another bull......he's a genius, out he comes broadside. I got a good look at both sides and decided he was a great bull, I placed a shot behind his shoulder and laid him to rest.

Although it wasn't the nicest place to bone him out, we made it work. It took us around 2 hours to debone, we then stuck the meat in sacks and dumped them in the creek. We then finished our walk back to camp to get some grub and gather up the horses. We made it back to the meat by 2pm, packed up the ponies and were back having a celebratory beer by 5pm.

beauty bull.how many horses do you have? Me and my old man are starting to get a little more seriouse about elk hunting we hunt toghether the two of us and try not to get to far out there because its only the two of us to pack it out.Hes 60 but alot tougher than me at 31.We can get it done but have found it pays to get a bit farther out.would it be doable to just use one horse to pack in some light gear and pack out a large bull with the gear on our backs?
