I harvested myfirst deer ever, after striking out last season. We were about 60 Km south ofKamloops at about 5500-6000ft in region 3.

Made it up with the truck to a deadend of a logging road and headed into some old growth pine forest on foot. many tracks on my way in, found a bedding area in some pine needles, and some steaming deer droppings ( it was cold up there in the morning) made it though the old growth to the back end of a cutblock. It was a great little spot were an old grow forest and a reforested area metwith a cutblock in the middle. I spotted a deer was grazing about 225 yards away nearthe reforested section in my binos. I checked and double and triple checked in my binos identifyingthe deer and counting the points. "there’s the back 2 tines"..."there’s the front 2 tines"hit The radio to my brother "Confirmed at least a 4 point Muley" ...I raise my brand new Ruger American 30-06 and my 3-9x Redfield was all over theplace with the adrenaline pumping. Lined it up took the shot..... miss… OMG. Hewent for the trees.. Then stopped. I got him back in my sights and really concentratedon my breathing to calm myself down. The rifle was rock steady on my exhale, aimed a little high to compensate to the distance of now 250 yards. I pulledthe trigger. the deer stumbled for 4-6 steps then went down. Radio'd to my bro" that's a confirmed hit " ( we have the garmin rino radios that hasGPS positioning of each other). By the time I walked up to the deer he waslifeless, perfect heart shot. My brother who gave and found me with the GPSwhen He took this picture,
https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/548332_10151208525311690_622153141_n.jpg

Then began the hefty task of getting this guy back to the truck once we cleanedhim. Took us 5 hours of back breaking work over 2km rough terrain but we got emback to the truck washed him out and loaded him up with 2 bags of ice and madeour way back to the lower mainland to the meat processor and got the trophy tothe taxidermist.

The time spent with my brother would have made the trip and awesome time, harvesting my first deer made it all the sweeter. would I take the shot againknowing that my truck is 2Km away? for sure. will I buy a quad? absolutely.

Thnaks guys, just talked to the taxidermist and he is excited! he is doing a full chest mount with a slight head turn to show off the 5th tine on the one side. ( he is a 5x4 point). now to convince my wife to have this over my fireplace, lugging a deer over 2 km's sounds easier.... :-)

That is gorgeous!! But the real the question is, where the HELL did you find a Ruger American? I've called everywhere and they all laugh at me when I ask when are they coming in?!! Great deer man!

Good to hear!

Caution about hanging him over the fireplace: He may dry and crack, or drum.
Typically, mounts shouldn't be hung over direct heat sources - Talk to your Taxi.

guywitha270 - got the ruger american at cabelas, ordered over the phone. Had a pre-order for 2 - .308's ( one for me and one for my bro) that got delayed that I had to cancel. Called around and Cabela's had 3 left in 30-06 and I ordered 2 of them.

got my deer back from from sumas meats in abbotsford, my deer netted 166 lbs of boneless meat!, got him made into sausage, pepperoni and the good cuts in roasts, and steaks. had the pepperoni and suasage wow is it good! I bought an apartment sized freezer and it is filled to the brim! going to be eating good! should also mention he was 442lbs on the hook,( head off, hide still on).... no wonder my back was so sore. lost some meat cuz he had to half him to get em out of the woods. still really pleased!

What kinda pose are ya getting; Head high, sneet, somewhere in between???

My 1st mount was head high w/ slight right turn of the head.
When I get my next one this fall, it'll be sneet.

Hey great buck! The only advice I would give you is skip the quad and buy a good pack and learn how to debone so you can pack a buck out easy. Or if you have more back than brains you can do this for 5km......
