I caught this fish in a slough and can't really identify them.
They responded well to meaty bait but have no teeth. Silver scales, no spots.

Haha. I guessed the species before I opened thr thread. Put that knife away.
Pike minnow ...previous to political correctness it was known as the squawfish.

Did you try eating them????

They're not poisonous, so as they say, 'you caught it, you eat it' and then you'll know if they're tasty enough for you to get some more.:razz::smile:
They're really full of bones, so unless they're canned with vinegar to soften the bones, they're more trouble then they're worth considering their rather poor taste, especially if caught in the Fraser backwaters.

 That's my favorite paring knife. It's a Tramontina I got from a surplus store years ago for 90 cents. Wish I bought more.

Don't jump to conclusions old crow.
I knew they were "whitefish".
I just wanted to know what exactly were they.

That's kinda like sayin"I knew it was a deer, just not sure what type"..I think it's time for a C.O.R.E like program for anglers

That wouldn't be such a bad idea, you know.
Or at least the ministry should put up a webpage dedicated to describing the fish commonly found in BC.
Google "fish species in BC" and all you find is salmon, trout and sometimes sturgeon.

lol..very true, but dont you think someone should be able to properly identify what theyre killing?Kinda like the donkey that was mistakin for a cow moose or the sea gulls that were thought to be snow geese.

You mean like http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/wld/fishhabitats/species.html ?

Been there before but couldn't find anything useful. I can already identify all salmon and trout and the protected species.
The native fish page is just a list of native fish (http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/wld/fishhabitats/native.html)
Something like this http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/wld/fishhabitats/fishfactsheets.html is much better but then again, it mainly deals with trout and salmon. Squawfish is not there.

Mr self-righteous, there's a big difference between the hunting and the fishing regulations:
In the hunting regs, it says there's no open season for any game except for what's in the regs.
The fishing regs don't say that. Also, legally, whatever is not expressly prohibited, it's legal.
As stated before, I know where not to fish and what fish I must release if hooked by chance.
So give me a break.

huh ? if you know why would you kill something then post it on the net ? asking what it is ?
there are types of "minnows" or fish in the same class as "pike minnow" that are protected..........there is small differences between them...........so if you would like a copy of the fishing regs ,I can get them to you.

let me make it simple for you: there are only a few fish that shouldn't be retained. Everything else can be even if they can't be identified.

These are all squaw fish, because we cannot use the word squaw fish or there will be another debate, but that is what they are!:-P

I was in the same spot once, and, as near as I could tell, after much searching, the fish I had caught was of the same family as the gold fish, which included, there about, 5000 varieties.

Most call them, that they can not ID, whitefish, wheras I call them gold fish, being good only for entertainment.

I am, at present, reading Robinson Crusoe

As long as we're identifying fish, what are these? The third from the left was delicious!

I remember a guy almost winning a Coho derby with one of those of about 15lbs caught in tide water. That's when a salmon was anything resembling a salmon, the only rule was you were allowed 4 a day. Someone realized there was something a little "fishy" about that one. Of the few I've bonked, I've never found SH to be particularly good table fare.
