My son, Cody, was able to harvest this youth season Region 3 high country whitetail buck yesterday. We had hunted some lower ground in the morning specifically looking for whitetails, but only saw does. We hit the high country in the afternoon, hoping to find a muley buck. I wasn't expecting to run into a whitetail at that elevation (1720m). Cody dropped the buck with one shot from his Model 99 300 Savage. This is his first whitetail buck. He has harvested several whitetail does over the last few years but had never killed a whitetail buck until yesterday. It is shaping up to be a great season for the Dana clan with 3 critters hitting the ground just in the last week.

Your kids are killers! Some of the biggest white-tail bucks that I've seen in the Kootenays have been at high-elevation, right around tree-line early in the season.

Congrats to you both! Great to see a WT taken, especially in those "fringe" areas they shouldnt be hangin round.
That will be the best table fair of your season.

One of the first signs that white tailed deer were expanding very rapidly (too rapidly) in the East Kootenay was seeing them in the high country where we traditionally saw only mule deer. They eventually began displacing mule deer in some areas.
Time to get a grip on it (white tail populations) before impacts are noticable (antlerless season required).

Can't kill them if you can't find them. Those WT are sneaky.

Great looking little buck, I'm looking for one myself right now.

The does are easy to kill and a doe season is required if the objective is to stabilize the growth rate.
Populations and growth rates will not be impacted with a bucks only harvest.

where is the rest of the buck, you have a photo of the deer head on your backpack. where is the rest does not look like it would be in your pack.

Didn't realize you have no doe season in 8. All Oct. is WT doe in 3. Still not as easy as you would think. Sounds like 8 is over run with the whities. I may have to come for a visit.

Cody has certainly done his part to help stop the whitey invasion in both Region 3 and 7A. Over the last few years he has killed 4 whitetail does and now this buck. We'll definately be getting another whitetail tag for his pocket and hope both he and his sister connect on a couple does later this fall. With the new GOS doe seasons in Oct and the youth doe seasons in Nov, the kids got a good chance to get er done.

As for the pack, he's got the front quarters, neck meat, backstraps, and tenderlion in that pack. He had already did a trip back to the truck with the rear quarters. I had my pack too but didn't need to use it. :)

Cody earned every step and every pound then.
