found this guy at turtle corner at lac du bois just hangin on the side of the road. We took him back to the big duck pond and let him go to keep him safe. Now I realize turtle corner has that name for a reason...they must be pets released into nature? or are these turtles actually native?

That it is!!
Prolific in the southern okanagan.
Got a couple in my koi pond.... Release them back to where I took them from every sept.
Cool critters.

Yep! Definitely a native turtle. The invasive ones are the Red-eared sliders, which have a long, reddish-orange stripe running down their neck from behind their eye on either side of their head. :)

Interesting thing is that the red belly you saw is exclusive to our western Painted Turtles. The other three varieties have little to no colour at all on their lower shell.
