I have a marine VHF on my boat. Just wondering if it will work for the forest service roads and pick up the logging trucks' transmissions?

you can use the radio, but will need to get the proper frequencies programmed into it. Check your local communications shop

To my knowledge, marine VHF is illegal to use on land.

Are you talking about this?

This has nothing to do with allowing you to operate a radio on land, this is for operating a marine radio on the water. I believe there is also a ROC-A for aviation, but again, that also has nothing to do with allowing you to operate a radio on land. You need to get your amateur radio operators licence, and get an amatuer radio (these you are able to scan frequencys instead of just having set programmed frequencies) you can talk on the HAM bands, as well as listen to the commercial bands. While not legal, it is also possible to have them modded to allow you to transmit on the commercial frequencies (say for calling out your position on logging roads which is not usually frowned upon).

And yes, marine VHF's are illegal to use on land, the marine bands are licenced to and used for other things inland which you may be interfering with, if you happen to interfere with something important, they will come after you.

There is a 2-day ham course including test and licence this october in chilliwack:

Intrigued, can you find some sort of webpage to link to about this licence? Also wondering if this course was only to let you use the search and rescue radios, which operate on commercial frequencies.
