We’re looking for Writers

The summer season is well under way and it’s time to start thinking about our article line-up for the 2013 issues of BC Outdoors Magazine. We want to make sure that any of our potential writers are keeping feature ideas on the brain as they set off for their summer fishing and fall hunting adventures. So do you think you’ve got what it takes to write for our magazine? If so, please send in your queries in for a chance to become a BCO contributor.

We publish seven sport fishing and two hunting issues every year that feature stories and information about BC’s best outdoor experiences. We also print “How to” articles, informative pieces, features on industry tips and tech and regional spotlights. This is your chance to share your knowledge and expertise with our readers: to introduce them to a new technique, present them with an outstanding introduction to your favourite lake or river or reveal your most hilarious (or heart-breaking) trophy stories.

Regardless of the subject matter, we’re on the hunt for some exceptional new talent. We expect unbiased, well-researched, accurate and articulate articles free from errors from all of our contributors.

We are looking for articles on saltwater, fly and gear fishing and all topics associated with each.

These articles must be illustrated with appropriate photography. We want stories that captivate and engage both us and our readers as well as reflect the true wonder of our incredible province and its resources. So compel us to try a new skill, provoke us with controversial subjects and ignite our passion about the great outdoors.

Sport Fishing:

We publish seven Sport Fishing issues annually and content generally reflects the season of each issue. The issues are: January/February, March/April, Spring (Lake Guide Special), May, Summer, September/October and November/December. We feature material from both salt and freshwater specialists, so there are no boundaries. We want stories from drift-fishers, fly-fishers, spin-casters, trollers, trappers, and moochers alike. Bring your experience to our arsenal.

Hunting and Shooting:

We publish two Hunting and Shooting issues every year: one for pre-season and one for fall. Our pre-season issue, which is printed in the summer, focuses more on prep and information that our readers need for a successful season, whereas the fall issue is more intensely focused on the hunt itself. But we want all sorts of queries for this upcoming year – stretch your creative muscles and give us an idea we’ve never seen before. With writing (as with hunting), thinking outside the box often produces the best results.

Guidelines:

We don’t want you to send in completed manuscripts – that would be crazy! What we want are well developed QUERIES – essentially article proposals. Please send along any relevant examples of your previous work, along with a 150 – 200 word outline of the article you would like to write for BC Outdoors. Your summary can be in paragraph or bullet-point form. This should be sent in a word document, using double-spaced 12-point Arial font, and should also include a description of the images you intend to send with your completed piece, and a brief introduction to yourself and your experience. The articles we publish tend to be between 2000 – 2500 words long, so keep that in mind when developing your ideas. Payment is industry standard.

Please email your submissions to kimc@outdoorgroupmedia.com. If you have any questions feel free to call me on 604-820-3400.
