Had a custom rifle in 300 Win Mag made for me about 25 yrs ago by Aubrey White out of Osoyoos. Has a synthetic stock with a camo pattern on it. The finish is a bit shiny...somewhere between matte and semi gloss and am thinking of dulling it down. Was thinking of simply taking some sand paper and roughing it up but not certain how good an idea that is with synthetic stock? Another possibility would be to spray a transparent matte finish on it. However, that may have UV brighteners in it that I can't see and the wily moose and elk can. Any suggestions??

Steel wool would probably work better than sand paper.

Just use a bunch of Comet cleaner and a wet rag.

We used to use Comet on vehicles when preparing a clear coat blend area. The comet just removes the gloss so that you can polish is back later. If you use sandpaper (unless super fine like 3000 grit) or green pot scrubbers they will leave scratches that will not look uniform. Comet worked so well that now all of the major Autobody material suppliers make their own versions of scuffing pastes.

Great info Shooter...thanks. Comet seems like the best starting point.

0000 fine steel wool, BC Sportsman, make sure it's the 0000. It'll do the job without scratching...
the Comet on one of those green dishwashing pads should also work well...
