Velvet is coming off now. Bugling will start any day, half assed squeeky practice.

Anyone have an explanation as to why Elk shed their velvet so early and keep their antlers so late? Hard to believe, but some bulls seem to go only a few days between shedding and growing.

My thoughts are that its the bulls harmons that that triggers the elk to start shedding mid Aug the big boys shed earlier then that of the younger bulls just like deer I see lots of smaller deer still caring velvet long after the bigger deer have shed there velvet.

The big bulls have there antlers ready to fight off other bulls come late Aug if the velvet was still on there antlers late Aug there antlers would still be soft.

Nature has its way it might be that the amount of sun light that is in the day that triggers the bulls to start rubbing there velvet ???? I do know that the amount of daylight left in the day in the latter weeks of Aug trigger the bulls harmons and they are ready to start rutting.

The big bulls I found when shed hunting they drop there head gear first reason being is they have lots more antler growth to grow in the few mounts till they rub off there velvet.
I find that the younger bulls carry there head gear longer because they don't have as much bone to grow in them short few months ,last year I filmed a 6x6 bull in the third week of Aug he had clean dark brown antlers as for 6 cows with him so he was ready to rut maybe the cows where not ready but he sure was he even gave out a small bugle saying these are my cows stay away..

I might be wrong on My thoughts but this is my opinion on velvet shedding and bulls dropping there antlers late spring ,H-47..

Just rolled in from 4 days of trail cutting in the weedy west kootenays with 358mag. Thought we would have heard a moan or two, at least at night......nothing however.
Have heard them screaming as early as Aug 24th. Guaranteed the fluff has been coming off on the mature bulls already.

On a side note. An area that was pounded with sign just happened to have just enough reception strength for one of my cell cams to get pictures out. Needless to say I threw one up.
Pretty awesome a guy can be sitting at home and recieve real time trail cam pics from 200 miles away.
What a world we live in!!!!

I know some of the bulls east of the Rockies have stripped their velvet already.

Ourea....you know you now have to post some of your pics when you get them, especially the ones with some junk!
Those cell cams sure as hell beats having to hike hours just to check photos in the off he beaten path t cams.

I've had bulls Aug 25 with velvet clean off, big boys should be looking nice and polished up in the next couple days. Having a hard time sleeping at night going over game plans.

Not sure on your data plan.....hate to see you end up with a nasty bill you weren't planning on ;)

Besides, admittedly you look at elk as meat not "bone"......

that already looks like its old? with all the pitch running and dried, might be just the picture but it doesnt really look fresh, especially if its aug. nice rub anyways, you just have to find him now.

This pic just cam in off my cell cam 2 minutes ago.
Just a dink 5 but he is out of velvet and already starting to polish up.
That says he has been clean for better part of a week to have that much color on his antlers already.
The dance is not far off now.....

looks like some nice country! i'm sure it wont be long until you get a screamer walk by there. i think this is going to force me to buy one of those t-cams. that is just too cool to get the pic on your cell phone.
