There's a fire burning in one of the drainages I like to hunt. It's small (<4ha) and being actioned by MOF so I'm not worried about it roasting the whole valley. What I am wondering is how far this will likely push animals. I'll be scouting the area in the next week and I'm wondering how this might change my game plan. I figure the good news is that it will help with scent control. The bad news might be that it pushes animals out of the drainage. Any experience or thoughts?

I would be hoping it does roast the whole valley, and then some.

Depends how hot the fire is. I've worked fires and seen animals feeding along very close to the fire and smoke. It doesn't always push them out.

Should be fine, the only thing you should be worried about is giving away your secret hunting spot.. hahahaha.

it wont push elk or moose anywhere !,

many, many times I have watched them eating minerals from the ground STILL smoking during a controlled burn !

Sorry Whonnock I should have qualified that. I wouldn't want it roasting the whole valley with me in it. Yes, it sure would be nice to have a bunch of burns to hunt in a few years. Thanks all for your feedback.

shot many animals in landings smoking from slash burning. The elk will be at the top of the valley

From my experience from the past dealing with the fire that have burnt an area I found that the animals move just outside the surroundings from where the fire had burned ,I personally have shot animals where the fire had burned latter that fall the next draws where the fire had not touched is where the animals will find there cover to bed ,newer growth will appear very fast in this new burned area after there is some rain....

I just got back from firefighting the capot-blanc fire#239 outside of fort Nelson. And every day there were new tracks down the cAt guards. Elk deer bear. We actually had a nuisance bear that was hanging around some of he pump sites. Between the 2 fires it was around 6000 Ha so ya if the fire pushed them out they were bAck in short order.
