Well, this will be the 2nd season in a row chasing this guy, he likes his steep cliffs and I haven't yet been able to catch him in a shootable spot. I'm heading out again tomorrow morning bright and early, he's one of 2 that I'll be chasing, the other one I think might be a little better even. We'll see though.

Just to get you guys drooling a bit, this is one I was chasing last year, but never caught up with him. Picture was from a trail cam I had out.

9.5" and around 5 years old.

How do you get the age from that photo? I shot a 10.5" goat a few years back that was only 3.5 years old. He looks thick at the bases but with out looking at him head on. Just curious.

I don't see a really distinct Roman nose formed and the neck and shoulders don't jump out at me as being overly beefy. These would be signs of a big ol billie. Would place this guy at 4 to 5 years old but I've been wrong before!

That first goat has to go 10.5 at the least! Now it is up to you to get a measurement!!!

Good to know. He doesn't have much of a beard eather. I just assumed that the photo was taken mid summer when they don't have their winter coat. These are the reasons I like hunting them so much. They can be hard to field judge.

an adult mnt goat ear is about 5 inches +, im gonna say this goat is about 10 inches in length

If I was trying to decide whether to shoot or pass, I'd put him around 8 1/2 to 9 inches. As a rule I always err on the smaller end of the horn length scale when judging goats to lessen ground shrinkage. When comparing ear length to horn I use 4 inches as my rule simply because the 4 inch darker area of the inner ear is easier to see than the 4 1/2 inch white outer. His face is dished, and hollow, he lacks body mass, all of these to me indicate a younger goat. The horns in the picture do not seem to sweep back either and this is where the horns usually show their length in an older goat.

Horn length is 9 7/8 "......... he was born on a Tuesday in a patch of moss on the south side of the hill, to catch the sun.
His mother's name was Edna.

Nice goat. Why the cropping?

The Picture was taken Yesterday. He's still wearing his full summer outfit, so I'm tempted to wait on him until the fall.

Nice goat. Why the cropping?

Those are 2 separate goats, the second one had a little bit too much revealing landscape in the background, and he's a monster so I gotta keep that one secret.

Thanks for all the reply's guys I was thinking in the 9-10" range, hopefully I can get a crack at him this year!
