This is only my second year hunting, and I have never hunted duck or goose before. I am very much looking forward to getting started on it. My question is, there is so much stuff out there it's hard to figure out where to start. What are the basics for gear that you guys would recommend to start out with for my first season?

I would get a duck and a goose call with a instructional DVD, half dozen duck decoys, half dozen goose decoys and if you can swing it a robo duck. Or make friends with someone who has all the gear.

dozen duck decoys, duck call, shotgun. If you plan on hunting in any sort of water you'll need waders. They dont have to be the most expensive ones out there but i would for sure go with neoprene. If you are hunting over water and it's too deep to wade in and retrieve the birds (which you should check before you start blasting) then make sure you have a way to retrieve them keeping in mind when you shoot a bird they can drift away quickly if theres tide or current. Shoot lots of clays before the season, have fun!

First you need

Then you will have to get

From there all you need is

Then to finish them (and were wolves) off you will need

Waterfowling is pretty simple.
Good luck!

In all seriousness you don't need a whole lot. Head out bounbdry bay with some wadersa (if you don't have some allready, get some cheap riverside bootfoot chest waders or see what stillwater has kicking aound). Go off the dyke, and there should be a big log out there and a blind. Pick one sit there and just pass shoot.make sure the birds ate within 50 yards and you'll be good. Find some used decoys (floaters are better and more the merrier. I also like to blend my duck species in terms of decoys, but mostly mallards and pintails). It is nice to have final approach and greenhead decoys but in all honesty the price point crappy tire flambeau decoys and lawn ornamments are just fine. If I stiolled lived on the coast I'd probably take you out.
