View Full Version : August Long Weekend Billy

Was lucky enough to harvest a nice billy over the August long weekend, near Terrace. Was a solo hunt, more of a reccy than anything and spotted this guy late in the day, climbed the mountain and came down above him where he was bedded. Got to a spot approx three hundred yards from where he was bedded but the wind was blowing steady, so decided to try and creep another hundred yards closer. Moved every time he wasn't looking down loose scree and finally got to a rock outcrop where I could shoot from. One shot from my .280 in the right front shoulder and he flopped his head down dead, didn't move from his bed. Caped and quartered him thinking I would hike out in the dark but went about thirty feet and realized I was too tired and he was too heavy, so dropped the game bags on some snow and found a flat spot in the rocks out of the wind, and climbed inside my backpack, put what clothes I had on, and shivered through the night. Was a long night, but beautiful almost full moon and lots of shooting stars. Halfway through the night I threw the cape fur side down over top of me and it made a big difference allowing me to get a little sleep. At first light I melted some snow for water and ate what little food I had, then deboned him. As I finishing deboning him another billy came out on the rocks right where I shot from and started snorting and stomping his foot at me. Pretty cool. Saw a couple nannies and kids and a big golden eagle on the hike out. The sunrise was amazing all the mountains were pink and the valleys were filled with cloud. One of the nicest mornings I have had in the mountains. The hike out was grueling but manageable once the meat was deboned.

His horns measure 11 5/8" with 5 7/8" bases and he was 9.5 years old. I feel very fortunate to harvest this beautiful goat. Unfortunately the camera died just prior to seeing him so only have my memory and the pictures prior to shooting him to go on. Will try and post what pics I do have.

Great solo hunt and congrats on a dandy mature billy. The memories are what counts . . . plus you've got the meat and the horn. :)

What a weekend to spend on those mountains . . . I dreamt about it as I drove both into and away from Terrace last weekend.

Wow congrats to you. It sounds like a great hunt. You telling of the cold night sound a lot like me on my recent sheep hunt. It was a long cold night. I was mildly hypothermic the next morning. It as all I could do to stay awake every time I stopped for a break.
Again a big congrats

This Billy goat you got on your solo hunt is a goat of a life time you don't get a goat very often as of this size and age and to do it on a solo hunt is even harder ,looking forward to seeing what pictures you have to post up here on HBC ,congrats on getting this fine Billy Goat...

Congrats on an epic billy and a brass-balls hunt! And glad to hear you made it out in one piece.

As someone who has solo hunted a couple of billies now and been forced to pull unexpected overnighters, all I can say is I can relate. Your effort and hardship will definitely make for great memories. Truly an awesome billy.

The best part is the "meat" hunter here posted it so humbly. Either he is an honest blue collar type of guy or a master manipulator....either way, I'd like to buy him a beer and shake his hand!

Nice looking country, gotta love where goats live! The horns are nice but it's the story that does it for me, any time you can cuddle up in a dead animal hide it's story to be told and repeated!

I did not weigh the bullet, but am guessing it lost the petals along the way. Did not find any in the meat though, maybe in the vitals?

It lost its front half penetrating the whole animal! It'll probably weigh 100-110gr still, kinda like a 180 Partition out of a 300 Mag would given the same circumstance.

Yeah I got that. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge TSX fan and have had great luck with them but just surprised to see it like that. I've also recovered TSX's in goats and a gbear that penetrated the "whole animal" and looked very different, that's all.
