I was wondering if anyone on here would give advice to a bow hunter trying to get his first bow elk, sept 1st what kind of calls to use? Is there rut or pre rut starting? or is it just spot and stalk? I am not going for a long time so I would be ok with a smaller meat bull, but of course if a moster is there I will take it, any help thanks!

we've had good luck on opening day Sept1 up in the Peace country for elk. The bulls will come in to cow calls, they're definitely in the rut then and the action can be very good. We've found lots of fresh rubs, ground scrapes, bugling bulls. Its a time of year where getting a bit aggressive with the bugle may work very well, since the bulls haven't herded up the cows quite yet and are still in the process of sorting out who's who :D

Where I live in the EK you won't usually find too many situations where several bulls are going crazy at that time of year. Mostly we get them by moving through areas known to hold elk and calling periodically, mix of bugles and cow calls, until we get an answer. Then we switch to mostly cow calls to get them into bow range.

If you spot one try to get in close to where you saw him and send out some cow calls. Always stay downwind, of course.

Primos ''cow girl'' (lime green) is great.............can really change up the call sounds easily

Primos Sonic mouth diaphram (red) is another one that works really good ( and it's hands free which is ideal at full draw )

Best week of the season IMO. More people you're hunting with the better your chances of success.

Once you get 'em going fire up the choir.

Finding the elk is number one when you have found them you can work them wind and your movement is the key on working them.

If a slash I find out there pattern where they come out into the slash and where they head back into the timber or other I then set up a self climbing tree stand or blind close to where they are coming out in the late evening wait and watch ,calling with a cow call a few times now and then will help ,camo up good and put lots of elk scent on as for scent away will help your needs..
