View Full Version : What kind of fish is this?
Anyone know what this is?
We caught it 2 weeks ago in Kitimat while jigging for halibut at 125 feet.
Translucent fins, and strange holes by it's gills.

I have caught these prehistoric fish myself... they are called Ratfish (Hydrolagus colliei). Their eyes glow in the dark like dogfish. Here is a link to Wiki http://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=ratfish&source=web&cd=1&sqi=2&ved=0CFoQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FSpotted _ratfish&ei=Z2oRUODQHaGciQLS84H4Bw&usg=AFQjCNHua5goaHANbJLZcTnynO2T_WlAAw&cad=rja

Believe it or not they used to drag for them and use the oil out of the fish for guns before, during and after WWII. Some of the biggest tow's of these babies came just inside Broughton Island between Hardy and Alert Bay, way back in the day of course, same with the Lemon Sole. W've had monstrous tow's of them when Dragging outside on the West Coast, had many spines deep into the mitts over the years, ayya yaa !!!

I believe it! I renderd some myself a long time ago.... but it stunk. I could have done something wrong but it stunk.

That neat little creature makes fantastic gun oil when you render it's liver. Ratfish oil.
