So I just purchased a couple boxes of Federal premium trophy copper in 7mm rem mag 140gr. Has anyone tryed this ammo out yet on deer or even bigger game? Usually I use a 160gr accubonds for elk but for some reason i cant get my groups at 300yrds to tighten up to more then 8 inches. Once i tryed these new 140grs it was awesome i shot both boxes and with no issues. 300yrd with 1.5 inch 5 shot groups. But is it enough for elk? the bullets at 300 yrds have a velociety of 2637 and 2162ft/lbs of energy the longest shot i would feel comfortable taking an ethical shot for my abilities is 400yrds and at that range the bullet drops to 1912ft/lbs of energy.

Anyways any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would think it should be plenty. The trophy copper's are either a barnes ttsx bullet made specifically for federal to load or a knock off copy of barnes ttsx. Either way they appear to be almost identical and therefore a mono-alloy bullet capable of great penetration and designed expansion. Should be more than able to take an elk even past the ranges you are talking. 1912ft/lbs seems a tad high for 400yards, unless there are handloads, but I haven't seen the trophy copper bullets available as components. But anything over 1000 is more than enough. Not sure what kind of minimum energy is actually required to penetrate and make an "ethical" kill but I know 500ft/lbs can definitely still kill most game with good shot placement. Anyways, I wouldn't hesitate to use that load. I tried the 100gr trophy coppers out of my 25-06 since they seemed to be, if not barnes, very similar to barnes but about 10$ a box cheaper but I couldn't get it to group less than 2" at 100 yards so I will be moving back to the barnes or accubond to see if I can get better groups.

I have taken a large bull moose with a 25.06 using Sierra 120 gr. bullets at a distance of 200 yards. A 7RM would be adequate however, the rifle is only as good as the person behind it. If you are not capable of making accurate shots time after time, then no rifle would be worthwhile. I think a 400 yard shot would be too far and would try to close the distance to somewhere at least 250 yards or less.

The area I'm hunting is pretty thick except for a few open areas at the top of the mountian. So for the most part the longest shot will be around 200yrds but every time i see them there usually between 100-150 yrds away.

Thank you everyone for all the info once again the members of HBC are a welth of knowledge and help

That is lots of gun for an elk. Shot placement is everything with any gun.

Sounds like a decent bullet in a 1/2 MOA gun...you'll be fine.
Guns don't kill anumals.....
A bullet in the heart kills animals.....it's all about the show placement, baby.

Very nice group you shot, Yota! With the penetration the mono metal bullets have, 140 grainers on elk
won't be an issue, just put the bullet in the boiler room.

Your bullet 140g you are going to use will work fine for elk ,elk are a strong animal ,bullet placement is the key when shooting any big game animal..
