What is the most serious firepower any of you out there have used for hunting black bear? Saw this clip on youtube of a guy who insists on using a 450-400 Nitro Express. And before anyone makes any British jokes, he was actually born American!

I've poked a few bears with my 458 Lott & 500 grain RN Hornadys.

Does a tidy job. :)

It did the job for him even with a poor choice of bullet ( a non-expanding solid).

My .450/.400 NE has become one of my favorite rifles and always makes a trip to the range when I'm shooting. Trail Boss powder + 210 gr. .41 caliber pistol bullet = a nice 1753 fps plinking round. I used a full tilt 400gr. Woodleigh to take my Bison 2 years ago. At 2125fps it put a nice big hole through the vitals without any bloodshot trauma ruining the meat. Currently working on a 300 gr. TSX to do the same on an island blacktail or moose this season instead of my .257 Roberts or .338 WM.

Why? Why not if it harvests game humanely without meat damage (very similar to the venerable .45/70), is fun to shoot and helps me get familiar in hunting situations to a gun I hope to use on Cape Buffalo in 2 years time which was the real reason for its purchase.

I agree with orion... non-expanding bullet wouldn't be my choice on a bear. They aren't built like an elephant skull.

Biggest cannon I've used on a bear is a 300wm

Got to agree with you on this one, i don't hunt black bear and have shooters every year, hell for fun i stalked one within 20 yards last year.

I have used a 3006, a 338wm, a 303 Brit, a 44mag, a 416 Rigby and next spring I'll use my 6.5x55. Of all those listed only the 416 has stopped a wounded bear charging (before the ethics police descend - it was wounded by a friends son on his first bear hunt). This is a free country, shoot what you want to but shoot it well.

I'm sure it killed the bear.

Laugh away laughy mclaugherton pants. LOL.

I have the shooting skills to drop a 6'+ black bear with a 250 savage. I still eat dead bears if they have a hole in the heart that's been put there with a 22 calibre bullet or a 50 calibre bullet. He's still in the freezer.

But RJ I still think you're cool.

I have a 45-120 3/14" the same round in American dressing. Great for shooting gophers and will penitrate a 4" tree and still kill a deer. (it was not on purpose my bud didn't see the tree when he shot still killed the deer) It is a lot of fun to shhot not much recoil just a huge push. I shoot 500 grain solids and 450g SP out of mine. In the process of building a 450 nitro on a double Dumolin shotgun (belgian) IT will be lots of fun too.

You need "enough gun" if you're going after those fearsome black bears, after all they've been known to kill and
eat grizzlies, kodiaks, and polar bears without breaking a sweat! No sir, if you're going after those monsters you
should at least have a rifle chambered in .577 T-Rex, and if Barnes makes a TTSX bullet for it then use them! :-)

He shot a bear with a collar on it. I don't know. Maybe it's legal in New Foundland. 450 400. Give me a break. Bear are soft skinned game. That caliber was used for killing Cape buff, Rino, and Elephant. I think it would work on a bear. And that's an absolutely awful trophy. Great big rub on it, Small and looks stupid in a picture with a collar on it. Like you went to the zoo to get it.
